Try opening the Device Manager, and selecting "Show Hidden Devices" from the View menu, and check the Display Adapters for any ghosts. If any are found, uninstall them, then try installing the driver again.
Any chance you could explain what exactly you did, aside from the frustratingly vague "lot of tweaking"? I'm having a nightmare of a time fixing a problem that sounds exactly like yours.
