Windows 7: 7900gs Fps drop when alt tab / skype is open

25 Jan 2011   #11

Sorry I forgot to mention, when skype is closed, in performance mod, I still got Situation Nº2

and another important situation:
When skype is open, all effects are enabled(aero..) and Anti Aliasing is OFF, I got normal fps, and can Alt-tab without fps drop

My 7900gs extreme runs css in 60 fps, 1920*1080p, max settings, (except motion blur)..

Then you have 2 culprits!

1) Skype
2) Anti Aliasing (it demands a LOT from your Video Card)

What i'd do:

1) Never have Skype open when gaming because: if you're playing online, it'll take some of your bandwith (assuming you're talking to one of your friends)

2) Never turn AA on, because at that particular resolution (1080p) the card gets bottlenecked and it won't handle it.

3) Play the game in lower resolutions and turn AA on, trial and error.

right now im playing without AA, I dont htink its a bottleneck, because I could use AA and skype in windows XP, without get fps drop, even when I minimized the game..
I think its a bad drivers compatibility with windows 7.

I'll buy a new video card soon, what would you recommend me? ( cpu - E4300@3ghz)

Thank you!

Depends on your budget, i'd suggest nothing extreme, since it'll be bottlenecking the rest of the components, i'd say a GTS 450 if you want full Dx11 support.

If you think 130$ is a little bit too much to spend, then i'd suggest a HD 5670, or even a HD 5750.
