need help with Nvidia GeForce 9300m G

I recently picked up a second hand notebook a few days ago. I purchased it from a second hand notebook store and they clean installed windows 7 onto it.

The guy at the store said he wasn't sure if he installed the right graphic card drivers and considering the fact it rebooted itself and switched into 16 colour mode the first time I used it; I'd presume he was right.

As far as I can tell the problem is purely around the Nvidia Geforce 9300m G... I tried a few different drivers for it from the Nvidia website, but they all did the same thing. I then tried looking up drivers more specifically for the ASUS brand F6S Model notebook, but unfortunately the only specifically made drivers I could find were Vista drivers.

What happens exactly is:
Every time I run any 3d excelerated software where things are detailed (my old openGL tests work fine), it goes from being completely smooth to freezing the computer... the fan (the fan on the graphics card; I presume) then speeds up alot... It either stays frozen until reset or it reboots itself...

I then have to use the "repair windows" option on startup so it doesn't go back into 16 colour mode.


I really have no clue what to do... I don't know if it's drivers, incorrect bios configuration, if it was accidently overclocked in store (directX 11 claims it has approx. 1521mbs of total memory when it's only a 512mb card )


If anyone could help me, I'd be very thankful... this is really stressing me out.

3 gig ram
2.50 ghz processor
Nvidia Geforce 9300m G graphics card

I actually did download that driver... I also checked if there were any bios fixes and alot of other things... but I just stumbled across an article that explained it all... it turns out the Nvidia card I have is known for over heating prematurely, and since this is second hand, I'm guessing there isn't that much hope for it...

It had all the signs of the problem... cutting out, freezing, reseting, errors, split-screen after reboot...
gah...

I'm thinking I'll have to return it before the warranty is up and try to find one as cheap but with an ATI card...

Unless anyone thinks formatting and installing Windows XP might help the graphics card be less exausted... but I dunno if it would have any effect.

Because of the tendency for notebook makers to use a non-standard device ID for their onboard graphics, using drivers from the nVidia website may be a problem.

The Vista drivers might have worked.

However, it sounds like you have a hardware problem as well. Some notebooks overheat due to internal dust accumulation.

The Windows 7 installation you're running right now, is it 32-bit or 64-bit? Did a quick check on ASUS's site they never posted 64-bit drivers.

If its 32-bit, go here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

Select Notebook, Select F6 (series) and then F6S (model) and then it will ask you for OS. Pick Vista-32bit. Then expand the Graphics option and download the driver they have posted and give that try by installing. Before doing so, go into Device Manager and uninstall the current driver and reboot before installing the driver from ASUS.
