    flashing a 6950 to become a 6970

    hello,

AMD Radeon HD 6950 to HD 6970 Mod | techPowerUp

I am wondering if flashing a gigabyte 6950 to becmome a 6970 is safe?

i suppose it would be safe, as its still technically a stock 'clock'
as far as i know its unlocking a partion of locked shaders.
but would it void the warranty.

    thanks :)

Yeah, flashing with a unapproved bios will void the warranty. No company supports that change, and even if you do it properly there is a risk of the card not functioning afterwards.
I don't say this in an attempt to talk you out of it, but you should be aware of the risk you are taking before you proceed.
The 6950 is not that far off the 5850 I have, (it's actually slightly better) you really shouldn't need the extra power unless you are running on something above 1080p resolution. I haven't yet stumped my card.

Of course, if you keep the original 6950 BIOS to flash back with when the card starts failing...

Exactly you can't fool the people that actually made the device.

If you try to do it and it bricks your card and ther is a chance it will do so then saving a bios will solve nothing cos your card will be bricked period...The manufactureres do it for a reason.. the card doesnt make the cut due to heat or w/e issue it's downgraded to a lower model. This is enabling the card to do what its not meant to for w/e reason so it's a risky proposition.
That said some cards will wear the flash and others just umm turn into boat anchors.

Flashing can only be done with the 2gb version of the card and it must be a reference card ..it has a dual bios so if it goes wrong it can be reversed.
