    Graphical Glitches with 9800GT

    Hello. First post here.

I recently bought and assembled a new computer for myself. At first it worked flawlessly but as of a few days ago I started experiencing graphical glitches (It started around the 15th, just as Shogun 2 Total War was released. In fact I noticed because of it). The glitches involved textures stretching out beyond their boundaries 'into infinitum' not only of models but also the sky and ground.

I figured it was a Shogun 2 issue seeing as the game is new and there are a number of bugs related to Nvidia cards in it. But I was then surprised when Crysis Warhead, a game which I've played way before Shogun 2 came out, displayed a similar error as pieces of models suddenly stretched out in the same manner. The game runs fine fir a good deal of time, but then it glitches once, and then something that I can only describe as a "cascade failure" happens because suddenly everything glitches out.

The issue isn't limited to games. For some reason when I end up leaving the game in question, I'm left with pixels on my normal screen, flashing different colors, and either flooding my screen until it changes somewhat like, by moving a window around or using the start menu.

I've done the basic. I tried installing new drivers on my machine, as well as checking DirectX (although I doubted it had anything to do with it). I then tried removing the drivers completely and installing them again, just in case of a faulty driver install. I checked my case for dirt but aside some small dust which I quickly removed, there was nothing worth notice. (although I did notice a certain pattern around the top surface of my video card. You know those remnants of glue paste left behind when you remove a sticky from a surface? It looked like that, around the pins. It didn't seem like paste though)

All the parts are new, but I'm wondering if my video card didn't happen to come damaged in some way.

For reference, here are my current specs.

    i5 Quad-core 2.1ghz
    4gb ddr3
    nvidia 9800gt

I guess that's all that really matters for this case. HD size or others wouldn't really play a part. But if you need more info, please tell.

Let me know if you guys think of something.

9800gt..new? or swapped out from another machine?....artefacts are normally but not always heat related so does your case have adequate cooling?
You mention pins? what pins? I just sold a 9800 card not so long ago and I don't recall "pins" on the top of the card.
And just an after thought I'd clean the crap off just in case its bridging transistors or caps or w/e

Maybe 'pins' isnt the word. Sorry, since english isn't my native language I don't really know the english terms for every component. It doesn't help that I don't know that much about hardware either. I'm speaking of those metallic sharp ends which use to bind the other parts to the card's bottom surface.

The card is new. Everything is, with exception of the HD which I swapped out from my old machine (Doing a proper format on the system's partition because of drivers and etc, just in case you thought that might be related). The cooling system I have as it is are three fans on the case. One at the bottom front, one on the side, and one at the back. In addition to one belonging to the card itself.

RMA the card..there should be no "pattern" on the top of the card..it certainly isn't gum residue.

and BTW welcome to W7 forums

Guess I might do that. Just one thing I recalled on the last hour. During one of my attempts at playing a game, when the game glitch-ed out to the point everything in game froze, I forcibly closed the game in time to catch a message that said my video card wasn't responding. It didn't last five seconds, disappearing afterwards (I assume it resumed 'responding' at that point), but it was when I got my first clue that the issue was with the card.

Anyway I'll contact the place where I bought the card to see about RMAing it, good thing its on warranty.

Card was damaged, probably something in the memory. Not sure what caused it but it's been over three weeks and no problems so far.
