    ATI HD 5870 Driver Problem

    Hello I've been having problems with my HD 5870 for a while now in games randomly it will freeze up and I'd have to restart the computer but say if music is playing in the background (like winamp, windows media player) it will still be playing, so its the display driver that keeps crapping itself + when my computer starts up again it says ati display driver stopped working.. I've got the latest catalyst 11.2 and everything else is updated to the latest as well.. it sucks if this doesnt get fixed because the card is fairly new as is my computer

    Core i5 750
    750W PSU
    4 gb ddr3 memory

    thanks in advance guys any help would be greatly appreciate

    Welcome Volkzzz

    Try installing the previous version of your ATI Driver and see if the problem resolved.

    Hi Volkzzz,
    I've had similar issues with my Ati 5870 (x 2) as well, and it is usually because I have updated ATI CCC without uninstalling the previous version first. Even though it is supposed to clear previous versions, it iften causes conflicts. In my case that is specially true because I run two in tandem.
    I do the following:

    Run:
    - ATI Catalyst Install Manager (through the -> Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\add & remove programs);
    - Select option to completely uninstall ATI/AMD software (make a note of other drivers you might need to reinstall besides CCC)
    - Find the ATI folder in Program Files / Program Files(x486) and delete it.
    - I use CCleaner to remove any registry traces of the ATI software;
    - Reboot and reinstall the ATI CCC package-

    Let us know if you get it going again-

    Thanks for the response guys, I completely uninstalled the driver and used driver cleaner in safe mode etc and then installed the latest driver through windows update this time.. So far no freeze and my fps has gotten heaps higher in all games in the 100-200-300-400-500 mark..

    Hello there

    I am having the same problem as Volkzzz did. Same issue where a little pop up message says "the display driver has stopped responding bla bla bla. . ." I have applied the same technique that JohnPC suggested but as I get into windows update and start updating, the system crashed and I get the "blue screen of death". I have tried it countless times but no success. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated :)

    Thanks

    Hi BrianBoi-
    Personally, I have usually updated hardware with packages directly from manufacturers, and I leave Windows to update Windows stuff. As far as the latests ATI CCC, which is vers. 11.9 I think, I have had some troubles with it, so I've stuck with vers. 11.7. This is because I haven't had time to deal with tweaking the new update for my system and the previous one still works fine. When I have time to wipe ATI off and reinstall 11.9, I'll give it another try. Best of luck!

    Hello there JohnPC
    Over the past I have also had issues with updating from ATI's website, I would download the driver, start installing and it would quit about half way through. The only driver that I found worked with my pc was the driver that came on the disk with the card (and that version is something like 10.6?!)

    Well please let me know how it goes, because this, I think, is ridiculous. All the best of luck with yours as well :)

    Ok so time for an update. . .
    I have reciently just reinstalled windows 7 on my PC (due to a crash :/!!!) and downloaded the latest drivers from ATI (11.9). I had no trouble installing them and decided to try it out. . . I have quite a few games on my pc, everything ranging from First person shooters to racing games. So I decided to open up COD 4 and try that out. As soon as the game loads and before the poor guy even has a chance to get his gun out, it crashes, with that same pop message appearing saying that the display driver has stoped resonding and has recoverd successfully.

    I decided to give it another try and sadly, no such luck. Got to the same point and crashed again. I tried a few of my other games including Flight Simulator X and those had the same chatostrophic actions. . .

    Any suggestions???

    Thanks in advance :)
