Yep.. Had to use VLC, though.. No other DVD software would work properly.

Use OpenGL. DirectX freezes it up solid.

If 2D is OK, I can live with that, I would not play games on my laptop.
Unless you want to view videos, then having hardware acceleration on works fine. I have tried VLC and it works for playing video if you set it to use OpenGL as Simba7 mentioned. I had tested it previously and found that it works as well if you lower the Hardware Acceleration to the second notch on the left, but using the OpenGL option is easier. I've also set my system to use the "Best Performance" options under System Properities. I find that there is not much difference between this and when I ran XP - they both perform acceptably well.

I wonder if there's a way to remove the embedded Direct X installation, and replace it with an earlier version. I'd be curious if that would even work to fix the problem.

just because it bsods your install, doesnt mean it will work for others, as it did for me. again, to the other person with the n620c,, it is working well with videos and directx when i installed following the instructions exactly

you have to uninstall the driver comletely until it gets back to standard vga diver and reboot before install. then install it using admin priv and xpsp2 compatibility mode

if your directX is not working, cant you run dxdiag and disable directx?

has anyone found a better driver?

Well, posting from 7 with this driver: http://mobilityradeon7500vistadriver...driverhere.htm . 2D performance is fine, but it turns out, with DirectX locking up the computer, video playback is almost impossible. I've tried all video output options:

"directx", "directx:noaccel" and "direct3d" lock up the computer (with Hardware Acceleration off they run, but extremely slow)
"gl" and "gl2" are slow as hell
"gl-ati" crashes the player

7 is a no-go for me yet...

The DNA drivers BSOD on startup for me too on n620c. Other XP (XDDM) drivers will allow DirectX acceleration but locks-up on video playback.

Latest ATI 8.12 XP drivers will disable all DirectX acceleration so its more-or-less Standard VGA.

I tested the ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 drivers on my Evo N800c.
After first reboot it seems to work perfect.
Video playback was very good.

BUT after closing the laptop lid, and then after opening again (resume from standby) the laptop freezes.
No chance to resume.
Had to reboot in safe mode and reinstall the Standard VGA drivers

Managed to get the DNA drivers working on my Evo N620c without a BSOD on startup, had to manually install drivers rather than running setup.

Can confirm that AGP/DirectX acceleration is available and that certain videos are playable without lockup. WMV & AVI are fine, but, MPG and DVD playback are a no go.

WEI fails to post a result suggesting an error from OS, driver...
