Is it neccesary to use driver sweeper or can we just install new video drivers over the old ones?
Not Necessary but even driver sweeper no longer removed all the amd/ati drivers from your system. I found out recently that since catalyst 10.2 amd has been storing it's drivers a folder called AMD. Driver sweeper for some reason ignores this folder when performing it's sweep and only uninstalls from the ATI folder, registry keys etc..

If that is the one that is in C:\, then no it isn't. All that folder is is where the installer extracts the install files to, it can be deleted any time you want after updating.

And no Driver Sweeper isn't needed, unless you have a bad case of OCD that is.

brianzion the best "fix" I have seen for rage is to fins the best driver that works with it for you, then place atioglxx.dll (found in the SysWOW64 folder) in the Rage folder. Then you can update to the latest if you want.

Yes it can be deleted at anytime however after you uninstall catalyst and even if you run driver sweeper windows will look at that folder and take what ever driver is available to it on boot up. At least that has been my experience in win7 x64.

Also just a fyi using driver sweeper does not constitute someone having OCD..everyone knows that most uninstaller programs do a sloppy job at uninstalling. Driver sweeper used to be a means to ensure a clean install of new driver package. There is a reason most techie sites recommend using it after you use the programs uninstaller.

Actually no Windows doesn't look there. Windows will re-install it from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository, which contains any and all drivers ever installed on the computer (as well as all the "native" Windows drivers from various hardware manufacturers). That is the one place that programs like Driver Sweeper don't touch, and neither does the AMD (and likely Nvidia) uninstaller. You also cannot delete the files/folders there without taking ownership of them, as they are protected system files. Don't recommend doing this unless you know exactly which folder contains the correct install files, as removing the wrong one can leave you restoring from a backup image or at worst re-installing Windows to fix the damage.

You can also uninstall them through Device Manager by uninstalling the device and selecting to delete the software/drivers for it (when the check box is present). If you have update drivers a few times and never done this it can take a while as you have to restart each time till you get back to the default Windows driver.
