    Hello there, Danny!

Tell me something, did you follow this steps?

    1) Uninstall any video drivers (integrated ones too)
    2) Power off your PC and unplug from power source
    3) Install your new GPU in a PCIe x16 2.0 port
    4) Plug your monitor to the DVI port on the new GPU
    5) Plug your PC to the power source and turn it on
    6) Install the new drivers
    7) Enjoying your new GPU?

Did you use the drivers on the CD or did you download the latest from Nvidia website?

No you don't have to buy a new GFX card. You just need to follow the steps Punkster outlined. Your on-board graphics driver needs to be uninstalled and the GTX580 drivers installed.

Pull out the 580 and put it back in, it may need re-seating to make full contact in its slot. In your BIOS see if you can find a setting to disable on-board graphics.

Post a screen shot of the error message please. Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

You shouldn't try to update your onboard graphics, you should uninstall them. because the new GPU (GTX 580) won't work with the onboard graphics drivers.

What do you mean with "my computer still think its vista instead of wndows 7 because i clicked upgrade instead of wiping the system clean."??

If i were you, i'd take things to the "extreme":

    1) Backup all my documents (on an external HDD/USB drive/DVD)
    2) Wipe the HDD
    3) Perform a Windows 7 clean install (with the card already on the PCIe x16 2.0 slot and the monitor plugged in it)
    4) Upgrade the drivers with the ones on the Nvidia website (280.26)
    5) Restore my documents
    6) Enjoy

Because it seems that the problem is not only your GPU but your Windows installation too. Of course let's try not to get to that point..

    1) Uninstall your onboard graphics drivers (intel ones)
    2) Shut down your PC, unplug from the wall
    3) Put the GPU (gtx 580) on the pcie x16 2.0 slot
    4) Connect your monitor to one of the DVI outputs in the card
    5) Plug the PC to the wall, turn it on.
    6) Windows will detect the new card and will install the WDDM 1.1 drivers, let windows install them.
    7) Update those drivers with the ones from Nvidia website
    8) Enjoy

I had a problem like this before, so I turned off the PC unplugged it from it's power source, waited about 30 minutes opened the case, removed the card blew any dust (With compressed air.)that was around the PCI express slot away, repositioned the card securely and it worked.

Sometimes when Windows can't detect the card it's because it's not seated properly.

Try that and if that doesn't work, follow the instructions these good folks already left you - such as uninstalling your on board video and etc.

Is the card getting power? Is the fan spinning on it?

Edit- Could you fill in your full system specs also.
