CCC problems, Graphical card updates and a messed up screen resolution

    Computer information: Alienware Aurora ALX
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Prossesor: Intel i7 2.80GHz
Video Card: ATI Radeon dual HD 5800 series

At first I did not know how to update my video card drivers, so I basicly looked online and found Cataclyst control panel, and it was supposed to update my drivers (I now found out I can update them via the device manager too). My screen resolution was 1920x1080, but after the update the screen pretty much shrank to about 1776x1000 (making a large black margin around my screen) and making all my icons smaller. When I right click on my desktop and I chose Screen Resolution it says its already on its highest (1920x1080) while in fact as I said above it is smaller. Although when I set it down one bit to 1776x1000 the black margin around the screen remains the same, but the icons become of normal size as I would have seen it in normal 1920x1080. This is ofcourse not a solution for me because I want to use my full screen. I have included a file where I took a screenshot of my desktop and painted abit around it to show you what I see when looking at my screen.
I have a theory that you can change this resolution in the CCC, however as things are never made easy the CCC won't open when I try to start it up.

A forum I found before may descibe my problem abit too: How can I fix my messed up screen resolution.

This has happend before, but I managed to reverse it and get my screen back to normal, but I pretty much didn't update my drivers sinse I bought the pc with the fear that the screen would go small again. Now I can't seem to reverse it anymore.

I have updated the drivers via device manager and installed (and deinstalled and installed it again multiple times) Cataclyst on my pc. So maybe if I roll back the drivers in the device manager, and then delete Cataclyst on my pc and reboot I can get my normal screen back, but I still want to be able to update my graphical cards.

So basicly, how to I open the Cataclyst control panel? Is the CCC the solution to my resolution? If not how to I reverse this?

I'm not very good with long detailed complex answers so keep it abit simple, and try not to make me destroy my pc :).

    Thanks in advance

I have a ATI Radeon HD 4850 and also use the Catalyst drivers. Although you can install the drivers from either the AMD's ATI web site (Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD) which are updated every month. You can also update via the Steam client (see the Steam menu, and select 'Update AMD Video drivers').
The resolution of you card also depends on the monitor you have, I have a Prolite E2407HDS which is a wide screen 24" screen, and its native resolution is 1920 x 1080 which you can set in the 'Screen resolution' option by right clicking the desktop (you do not have to use Catalyst CC to set it).
There are two ways to load catalyst CC, is 1. Right click the desktop and select 'Catalyst Control Centre' or 2. via the Catalosy Control Centre in the start menu or 3. load direct from "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CCC.exe". It does take a few seconds to load up though.
To avoid messy backgrounds, any background pictures should really be re-saved in the same resolution as the monitor to prevent any bad stretching by Windows and thus the black borders.
Also the resolution should be whole numbers and 2147 x 1271 is not a good resolution.

All three ways of opening CCC was unsuccesfull. I believe my drivers are up te date now.
My problem remains that my resolution is messed up, as my desktop says I have 1920x1080, but I still see a black margin around my screen.

Also, the picture I posted wont be an acurate resolution, I just posted it to give you an idea of what the black magin around my sceen looks like.

Open CCC form your taskbar if it shows. Otherwise, from your windows "Search Programs and Files", type Catalyst Control Center and select it.

I had the same resolution problem and solve every time by adjusting the "Scaling" option in the CCC. (See attachment JPG).

    Hope this works for you.

CCC won't open. Each time I click on it it loads for a second and then nothing happens. Wherever I open it from.

Catalyst CC requires Microsoft .NET Framework, it could be that which is preventing it from loading. Which versions of .NET Framework do you have installed and are they Service Packed?

Check Installed Updates in Control Panel>Uninstall a program then click on Installed Updates to see what versions of .NET Framework are installed.

Check Windows Updates to see if any later versions of .NET Framework are waiting to be downloaded.

Well as I said I have version 1.1.4322.573, and Windows currently doenst need any updates from what I can see.

An update: When I open World of Goo, the resolution is just fine (uses the whole screen) but when I run Crysis, I get the same black margin around my screen, and the resolution options in the game are already maxxed out.
    Dunno if this helps.

I'm no gaming expert as I don't play them, but if the problem relates to a particular game, it could well be it's video requirements are too much for your existing graphics adapter.

Time to buy a better graphics card?
