horizontal lines scrolling down the screen when watching a video

im on windows 7 with an intel i5 2500k integrated graphics chip, and no other video card.

Every time I watch a movie (doesnt matter what I use, I tried VLC, media player, and media player classic) when there is a little bit of action or panning on the screen I get these horizontal lines that scroll down the screen. its like the screen gets displaced by a pixel or two where the line is.
I tried pausing it or screen capturing when the line is happening but it doesnt seem to show up in the screenshot.

I have gone through all the different de-interlacing options in VLC and nothing has made the slightest bit of difference for me.

One thing I noticed is that it doesnt seem to happen when watching a full DVD9 (or whatever) uncompressed .ISO...... but that could have just been I didn't notice it on that particular movie. . ..

Please help this thing is driving me nuts!

usualy in games it has to do with ur graphics not being synced up with the games frame rate so you'le sometimes see like a weird hard gradient change (the line) that moves up and down the screen. dk if its the same with videos but i dont see why it could be so much different. it can SOMETIMES be solved with a better graphics card. chip sets are renowned for having problems and being a bit weak.

edit: it hits me, if its just one preticular movie than its possible same problem i mentioned but your computer is reading it at a higher or lower frame rate. standards are 30fps, 60fps 25fps, 23fps but some go higher or lower, just a possibility, couldn't tell you for sure though if its just this movie. mabe if you wanna try somthing called FRAPS, it will do a frame rate overlay and tell you the frame rate. if the movie is in an odd format it might not work, but it should, just, when the lines appear, look at the frame rate for a sec and u can see if thats the problem

hmmm, it sounds like it could be a similar issue but the line only moves down the screen and never up lol. it happens most of all when there is horizontal panning in the movie but also when theres alot of movement on the screen.

I havn't tried fraps yet but i dont see how it could be a framerate anomaly with a particular file, it happens on every single video/movie file I try and play, no matter what the file format or resolution of the video is, it does seem to be more noticeable or at least more frequent on high def videos though.

its a pretty recent chipset i guess and intel marketed the 2500k version as being optimized for high def and h264 playback and all that, so i would have thought it should be able to play that stuff fine. There is no stuttering or lag or anything, and the CPU barely breaks a sweat while playing them.

its rather puzzling as to why im the only person who seems to have this particular problem with video playback.

Get MPC-HC and try enabling VSync in it.

thanks for the MPC tip man I got the new version and noticed on their site they had a new 'anti-tearing' - However I dont quite know how to impliment this, what I did try was both the 'vsync custom pres' and 'vmr9' video outputs with alternative vsync box checked (and I also tried changing the buffer up from 5 to 60).

none of this seemed to help the matter though, I see there are more custom sync settings within MPC (to set up the speed and framerate of tearing) but i havn't touched those as I have no idea what im doing there.

it wouldnt fix it, but its hard to fix unless you can pinpoint the problem, if the frame rate drops for a split second while its happining, thats possibly the problem. also consider looking at you graphics card temp while watching vids and make sure its not going above 60 degress celcius. its possible the problem is over exertion

Do you know what graphics card you have installed? A simple driver update may fix the issue, Nvidia and Ati both have drivers that smooth out video and combat against interlacing on video playback. Here's a demonstration of what it does (providing it doesn't interlace ;-))

mrneeds: theres no other graphics card its all running from the integrated intel i5 2500k chip.
Dont think its an overheating issue or anything like that. the CPU temp reading stays the same while playing a movie, around 30C. each of the cores reading between 30-40C.

After a bit of testing I actually noticed that this isn't happening at all on my viewsonic LCD monitor (currently connected with a vga cable), It only happens when I view the movies on my Samsung full HDTV (which is usually what I wanna do)

ive got the output set to clone monitor, and digging through the display options I found that my monitor was set to 60hrz and the TV to 59hrz, I changed that to 60hrz too however and im still getting the problem on the TV. It is connected via a DVI-HDMI cable.

Now that must help with getting closer to the actual issue, it must be something with the TV itself I guess rather than my display adapter

It's most likely the Vertical Scan Rate on the TV. You can set this in Intel HD Graphics for the TV but you'll need info for the TV itself. It should be in the TV specs. Changing some of the custom settings to the wrong value can destroy the chipset or other parts of the PC.

In fact, you must acknowedge the danger.

okay, it seems like that might be it!

But i don't really know how to proceed, i havn't even gone past that warning screen in the intel control panel yet cause it says something terrible might happen.

If I press the info button on my tv it says its displaying at 1920x1080 at 60hrz..... so I looked through the samsung manual and found a chart of what looks like all supported display modes.
and in mode VESA DMT/DTV CEA it has 1920x1080p, and lists vertical frequency of 60.000Hz.......

is it save for me to go and dig around in those custom options in the intel control panel or should I maybe contact samsung and ask them about it? (havn't done that yet because I would most likely get someone foreign and not be able to explain my problem properly )

    Thanks alot :)
