Running W7, 64. Have a wide-screen LCD monitor, and I want 1024x768, period. That will chop some screen area off each side, fine. But even with the 1024x768 setting, the display is stretched horizontally and shrunken vertically, so photos look awful.
How to fix?
Windows picks up the resolution available from the actual monitor - so unless you can change settings on the monitor itself you will only have the widescreen options available.

I know the problemI am in the process of trying to get a 19" HDTV to give the resolution promised. it has the opposite problem to your's - it keeps reporting it's a 4:3 Aspect 1024x768 not the 1360x768 on the VGA output I need for the Laptop. DVI is fine though
Having the same problem. Round circles like google earth sphere is an elipse. I tried in vein to adjust the monitor and the computer display every way possible I think. When I was using my XP computer and the same 23" monitor, I was able to solve the problem by clicking stretch on the computer display but this WIN 7 computer won't do it.
I fixed it. I changed the "screen resolution" setting from 1024x768 to 1280x768, and now the photos look normal.
you should run your LCD monitor at its native resolution to get the best image. Running it at lower resolution can jntroduce jagged text and a fuzzy image.
The problem with that is the photos are tiny, because the "native" is huge. I have thousands of photos that I've run thru Photoshop, most in 800x600 and some in 1024x768.
Doesn't seem that long ago when I paid $90 for a 128MB Smartmedia card---.
