Cant change resolution after reboot, fine before!

Hi all,

as per usual, it is a problem that has seen me look for help and find this forum.

I have installed windows 7 on a laptop that is a few years old (fujitsu amilo v2035pro).
I thought all was fine, i used the xp gfx driver for the video which is a via s3g unichrome igp pro.
It asked for a reboot, which i did and the video came back great at 1280x800.

Trouble is, everytime i reboot the resolution goes back to 640x480 and i cant change it. I have to unistall the device, reboot, reinstall and it is fine again.

Talk about frustrating. When installed the machine works great but why the resetting of the resolution? It makes no sense.

Any help seriously appreciated as i am going insane

I'm not sure why you would install a video driver meant for XP on a Windows 7 system, or even how you managed to do this. Did 7 not install a driver by itself?

Windows did not pick the drivers up automatically. It is not uncommon i think to use xp drivers for video cards but you just have to forgo the Aero option. Just a case of forcing the driver in via the inf file.

Like i say, it works fine until a reboot.

It does sound like Windows 7 simply doesn't accept the XP driver (at least once it restarts).

I was able to find out that your S3G video is integrated into the VIA VN800 chipset that's part of your laptop. A Google search for VIA VN800 Drivers Windows 7 seems to turn up quite a few results.

One that looks particularly promising is here: VIA VN800 drivers for Windows Vista - it's for Windows Vista, but many Vista drivers work fine in Windows 7 since the driver architectures of Vista and 7 are very similar.

I did see your thread on my searchs but just assumed that as this was a fresh install with no 3rd party software installed it must be something else. Nonetheless i will check what is in there.

Okay, just to update the thread so as to hopefully help some other poor soul with the same problem in the future.

It turns out the video drivers were a red herring, upon reboot the monitor (its a laptop) was changing to a Generic non PnP type. Once i changed that back to a Generic PnP instead it works fine.

I never tried the drivers listed above as the ones i was using worked okay and i didnt want to rock the boat anymore
