GEforce 9800GT 1gb - random crashes in Windows 7?

Hi All,

Recently purchased a new system and clean installed Windows 7 32 bit.

I'm having an issue when playing games where the game will randomly crash back to desktop without an error message. This is sometimes prefaced by graphical glitches but not always.

I have run stress tests through Everest and similar and monitored the CPU usage and temperatures - everything seems reasonable (CPU's and GPU havent ever been about 60 degrees C that I can note).

Have removed and reinstalled drivers, increased fan speed (just in case) and turned off the CPU overclocking. Is anyone else seeing issues of this nature with a similar build/OS?

System specs are below - any advice would be appreciated as its driving me nuts.

250 GB SATA-II HDD UDMA 300 7200 8MB
Black & Silver ATX Tower Case
Samsung (S222A) DVD PLUS/-RW 22x Dual Layer - Black (IDE)
4 X USB 2.0 Ports
Motherboard Integrated 5.1 Sound
Motherboard Integrated Ethernet Lan (Broadband Ready)
450W PSU
22" Widescreen TFT Black/Silver - 5MS
Asus M2N68-AM 2000MT/s (NVIDIA 7025)
AMD Phenom X3 8650 (3 x 2.3GHz) 3.5 MB
Standard Operating System Backup
Built & Tested CP
Corsair XMS2 4GB PC-6400 800 MHZ (2 x 2 GB) - Lifetime Warranty (DDR2)
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT - 1 GB - 2xDVI/VGA/HDMI (Palit) - OverClocked
AMD Heatsink & Fan - Low Noise

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Are you using the 190.38 display driver? If so you might have better luck with the older Vista drivers like the 182 or 185 series drivers for Vista. Quite a few are having problems with the newer Win7 drivers.

You might also try using precision tuning utlity from EVGA to turn down the overclock on your card or to turn up the fan. EVGA | EVGA Precision | EVGA Precision

That 450watt PSU might not be enough to power your system.

RE: PSU

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am using the .38 drivers so I might drop it back to the older Vista ones and see what happens.

I queried the PSU with the company who built the system and they have reassured me the system will run on the 450w PSU. I'm more inclined to think its either a temperature issue (fan now turned up to max, all other settings for card through EVGA Precision now on "Min") or a driver issue as I'd assume that if it was running out of juice it would cause the system to reboot?

Appreciate the advice - will look at the older drivers now.

Go with the 182.50 or the 186.18. If you think it's heat crank up the fans on precision and also turn up your case fans and see if the problem changes or not.

So many are having problems with the 190.38 I lost count, they work for me though.

We can think about the PSU as a last resort but 450watts is on the edge for sure.

Windows 7 - 32 bit.

Hey,

Wouldnt let me install any of the older Vista drivers, kept saying there was no compatible hardware. Have just uninstalled the .38 drivers, rebooted and windows has installed some sort of Microsoft driver (8.15.11.8171) which correctly identifies the card etc - unfortunately it now means that EVGA doesnt work for some reason.

Is there any sort of app I can download that will test the PSU at stress and give me some diags that I can actually understand? I'm no novice by any means but some of the stuff with the PSU jargon goes over my head (voltage, rails - etc).

Thanks,

D
