Hi nakhoda , try these NVIDIA DRIVERS 296.10 WHQL ,you really should use the Sony drivers even if it means using the Vista drivers in compatibility mode , Laptop manufacturers tweak the graphic drivers to run better on their machines :)

    Pebbly's quite right.

Try Sony's Vista drivers - they'll more than likely be just fine.

Hi, may I ask what the steps were to install the vista drivers? I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate last year with no problems. The update process must have retained the Nvidia driver.

Last week my HDD failed, I installed a new one and
had to do a clean Windows 7 install. Now it shows in Device Manager as standard VGA device or something.

I managed to recover most of my C drive onto an external drive, so I believe I have the Vista drivers in C:/Drivers. I ran the Nvidia installer and rebooted but no change.

When I try to update the driver through device manager I get the message that the best driver is already installed.

Any advice would be most welcome!

Hello Tim and welcome to Seven Forums.

What Nvidia product(s) do you have installed? If you know the product type and series you can manually search the Nvidia website. Or you can let Nvidia do a scan of your computer.

Hi and thanks for the welcome! Hopefully I can contribute to help others also. My card is Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT, same as the thread starter, that's why I hijacked the thread!

I bought the laptop, a Sony Vaio VGN-AR41E back in 2007, so it's doing well! I have been to the Nvidia site and did the scan but when I try to install I get a message saying that no Nvidia device detected or words to that effect.

The Nvidia Site also advised downloading drivers from Sony Vaio support, but I can find none.

So I was hoping I could install the original Vista drivers it came with. I have got these in C:/Drivers, which I think Windows creates during the upgrade process from Vista to 7.

As I sat, when I try this Windows says the best driver is already installed, how can I override this?

The PC functions Ok without the Nvidia drivers but thing like Cover Flow in iTunes isn't supported as things are.

Managed to solve this issue. I downloaded the Vista drivers package from Sony Vaio site. The driver setup file is in the Video folder. Installed and rebooted and now shows in my Device Manager.

Thank goodness for that! My Windows performance score went from 1.0 to 4.6!

Since the Vaio is 5 years old it just may not be able to handle the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers. So the suggestion to use the Vista drivers makes sense if you can install them in Compatibility Mode.

    Compatibility Mode

Another possibility is from the Nvidia main driver download page to select the Beta and Archived Drivers. Select GeForce > GeForce 8M Series (Notebooks) > 8400M GT > Windows Vista (with proper 32 or 64 bit designation.) Save the driver to desktop or someplace else that's convenient and try installing in Compatibility Mode.
