    Video hardware error

    I've been having problems with the ATI drivers for my HD Radeon 5470. In the last few weeks, a problem with my video hardware has caused my computer to freeze and the screen to go black for a few seconds every now and then. Most of the time, Windows manages to get the video card running again and the screen returns to normal. On one occasion, it froze and the screen remained frozen, so I had to force a shutdown. The video hardware error seems to happen when a lot of memory is being used (for example, doing a virus scan). Please help.

    We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

    If you are overclocking STOP

    You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

    To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

    The procedure:
    * Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
    * Zip up the copy.
    * Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
    *If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
    To ensure minidumps are enabled:
    * Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
    * Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
    * Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
    * Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
    * Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    * OK your way out.
    * Reboot if changes have been made.

    "It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

    Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

    As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

    If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

    If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

    Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

    Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

    If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

    I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

    Did you proceed with the steps laid out in the link given by zigzag3143 for STOP0x116. You are not getting the 0x116 crash, but your crash is nearly identical and the steps there should be helpful. Post back if you need any help with the steps in that link.

    I haven't done the steps laid out in the link given by zigzag3143 for STOP0x116, but Dell Support Centre advised that I update the BIOS to the most recent version. I think my version is nearly 2 years old.

    If they have a BIOS update available through DELL, and your system is stable enough to run it, then do so. If your system crashes randomly and without cause, I would hold off on doing so. A BIOS flash can render the system completely useless if interrupted, and a blue screen crash may interrupt it.

    Thanks for the help, writhziden. I decided not to update the BIOS for the time being until I get the video hardware problem solved. I read the steps in the link and I'm not really sure what to do. Were you able to read the DMP files that I uploaded?

    I was. They were all 0x117 errors, which are just a slight variant of the 0x116 errors and have the same troubleshooting steps.

    I think the video hardware errors started to happen a lot after Windows Update installed Internet Explorer 9 on 3rd March 2012. My AMD driver version number is 8.742.0.0 and the date is 01/06/2010, so maybe I need to update the driver? I have uploaded another DMP file regarding a video software error that happened just now. The AMD driver detect software at the AMD website recommended that I updated to a new driver.
