Nividia GeForce 8400m gs just vanished after win 7 upgrade

My HP dv6735en with above graphics cards just vanished after upgrading from vista to win 7. In device manager the only listing under graphics is the VGA card (even screen saver shows insufficient graphics error) I tried searching new hardware no luck
    Please help friends

Sound like you need to install the graphic drivers. I'm a little surprised that the Vista drivers didn't carry over, if you did an in-place upgrade to Windows 7. (Or did you do a clean install?)

Because notebook makers tend to use custom device IDs for their graphics adapters, the place to begin is with the manufactuer.

HP doesn't list Win7 drivers for that notebook, but you may be able to use the Vista drivers:

NVIDIA GeForce Series Video Driver HP Pavilion dv6735en Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)=

If that succeeds, you can probably get newer drivers through Windows Update, or directly from nVidia:

    Drivers - GeForce

You can also try the nVidia drivers before trying the Vista ones from HP.

Good luck. Let us know what works.

    Hi bobkin
    Thanks for reply
I tried a clean install on a separate HD, following the instructions from the hp website using all the links to drivers they advice for the specific product but there where many devices that did not work 100% eg graphics, remote controller, quick launch buttons,DVD drive etc.
I tried the upgrade and that's where the graphics card does not show up.
With the clean install hd the graphics card presented but some features were absent depending on the windows 7 driver I used (I tried quite a few including the original vista ones)
You mentioned installing the graphics drivers but 'searching new hardware' does not bring up the card.
    Am I doing something wrong?

I am enquiring about restoring to vista from the recovery partition elsewhere on the site as an alternative since I know that would get all my hardware running fresh.
Please don't hesitate to request any info you might need for analysis since am new here and not sure what you need
I have one or 2 more ideas I will test today will keep you posted

The driver installation packages that I mentioned are self-contained.

    Download them and run them.

    Let us know what happens.

When you download your graphics drivers, it's always best to save them in a download folder on your backup drive.

They are fairly hefty 200 Mb or so downloads, which can be problematic for anyone with a slow internet connection, and in any event, you'll need them again if you reinstall Windows.

    The plot thus far.
With the HD running the clean win 7 install the graphics card functions although not fully.
When I swop out the HD with the one running the vista to win 7 upgraded OS no graphics other than onboard VGA presents.
Even when disabling this and searching hardware nothing comes up wrt graphics.
I am in the process of downloading sp38834.
Also tracking down copy I might have downloaded and saved.
Sea vixen I am also trying to attain copy of Recovery disks but not winning yet. As I said its an ex UAE unit and will keep all posted

Good news ....and not so good news.
I downloaded (and saved) the driver sp38834 as suggested and uninstalled VGA adapter.
Everything wrt graphics card seemed to work ok but, now a bunch of other niggly issues coming up which didn't exist prior.
My wireless assistant is gone, my Bluetooth connection to my phone connected and worked flawlessly before but now says missing hardware, software or driver, the Skype icon on my quick start bar has taken on a system icon appearance although it seems to be ok and that's just what I noticed thus far
I have installed a few programs and drivers as problems arose since but nothing that could ave such far reaching effects
Usually this would be the point where I say to hell it ad factory recover everything from the recovery partition start fresh but that is no longer an option
