Q6600 with GTX 480

What power supply do you have? Going from the 9500 GT (which was almost as low as you could go when the Nvidia 9xxx series came out, only the 9400 GT was lower) to a GTX 480 (which was the top end when it came out), is also going to require a massive boost in PSU.

50 W for the 9500 GT (card only) versus 250 W for the GTX 480. Something to consider before dropping money on the new card, as you may need to factor in a new power supply to run it.

Stormy13, in hisnvery first post he said he had a 650, so if it is a single rail like the coolermaster650's then he wont have problems, but I think even with a normal dual rail 650 it will be enough forna 480,since his cpu and all the rest draw so litlle, but not sure, anyway good advice,I completaly forgot about that.

I'm running a Q6600 2.4 (overclocked to 2.88) and 3gb ddr 2 800 Ram, with a GTX 560, works great.

ah i still thinking about the 480 , since it's 2010 and we are half the way to 2013

so i might try 5xx , A comparison is needed, then i'll take my final decision. btw will it fit into normal size case?

by the time then i didn't need to buy a high end card .... but now i do .

Firstly, congrats on your psu, its a great choice(its the one where the gx is writen in orangei think) anyway that is a single rail psu, so you have enough "juice" for any single card, I ran a stock 580 with a gx650 psu and even overclocked my i7 950 at that stage, so no worries in psu. As for comparrison, I am not gonna post stocks,and graphs and all that stuff, I will keep it simple.

480 was the best 4series card.
580 destroys a 480 in any game/bench test.
Some test and most games, a 570 will beat a 480.
A 560ti is weaker and performs much less then an 580,but uses less power and stays in the 50-60degrees C, the 580 will EASILY reach 85+ degrees C if you dont have effective cooling.

The 560 is newer tech then the 480, but 480 is more powerfull. Mostly users will get a _70 cause its a great value for money, ie: 470 or 570, the 570 uses less power and has less heat then a 580, and performs a little less, on extreme games,it will perform even less than a 580, but is still better then a 480 or 560.

Basically, 680 better then 580, 670 sometimes better then 580, 580 better then 480,470 and so on. 570 better then 480,470... And lastly 560 cheaper then all, and good power/performance ratio. But if you want to wait, then opt for a 580,from personall experience they are beasts! Then again, a 680 is better.

Edit. Please update your system specs in the left corner, for example,look at mine, it must show atleast the basic details, so we know what chassis you have,size ect.

As for if it will fit, yeah aslong as your mobo supports x16 lane(not realy,just aslong as it has a pci slo

) and if your mobo is an atx form factor, then it will give you a good basis, a 480 is maybe a little longer then a atx board is wide, 580 sticks out a bit more.

I have 2 gtx 480s in sli, with a phenom II 955, an they run perfectly, but they can get very hot ( 80-90c) an you also need a good powersupply has a gtx 480 can be power hungary, but if you can live with them two things then go for it, you wont be dissapointed mate.

Upgrading is a slippery slope. Here's a little more grease:

Have you looked at the Radeon HD 7850? It's two generations newer than the GTX480, and the 7850 uses less than 150W. The 7850 costs a bit more than a new GTX480, but not a lot. I haven't found a straight benchmark comparison, but I believe that the 7850 would outperform the 480.

I tend to prefer NVidia's drivers, but I'm not a fan boy.

yea, i can't make-up my mind yet , my problem is WHAT IF .... the new vga wasn't able to run new games , max pain 3 , GTA V ,and others, i don't wanna end up saying i wasted my money. anyway gotta make a decision soon .
