Just a question what happens if the CRT is on when you boot your system?

yes, if the monitor is already on in standby it starts up with proper resolution. but if its off and the video card sees no monitor it defaults to a really low resolution...

I've searched for a explination as to why your CRT would change the resolution after you boot the system then turn it on, with no success.
My suggestion is to just turn on our moitor before you boot your system.
I know your looking for an explination unfortunately I can't find one. Fabe

Have you updated your graphics drivers?

TBH, this sounds like it is a monitor issue. The video card just doesnt see the monitor when you turn it on, and thus defaults.

ill have to disagree. this is no different than booting a machine with no monitor connected at all, and then connecting a monitor and windows forcing 800x600. i have never seen this kind of behavior. and the fact that just clicking on nvidia control panel causes it to go to the desired res tells me its software. keep in mind, im not going into nvidia and correcting resolution, it corrects its self the instant i click on shortcut to nvidia control panel. either way a minor annoyance! thx for the input though...

    Interesting...

Just for the sake of testing, have you tried an LCD monitor with this computer?

Have you updated your graphics card drivers?
