ATI 4850/Samsung LN32A650 Problem

Thanks for the help. I will try the Catalyst solution and see if it will work.

Somehow the problem seemed to fix itself (I just hooked up a normal monitor and it worked fine, so then I hooked up my tv as the secondary, then while the computer was on and both monitors were activated I swapped cables and made the TV my primary monitor.. It somehow picked this up and the issue seems to have resolved itself. I also got a new update from Windows 7 for the ATI drivers not sure if this helped at all, but I can still not get my native resolution to work..

As suggested, I downloaded ATI CCC 8.9 and installed. The problem with mode not supported is solved.

A further question, does this mean that none of the new ATI drivers will work with HDTVs (such as the Samsung LN32a650)?

I see the newest version for Windows 7 is 9.9

Did using ATI CCC 8.9 solve the resolution issues as well? Are you now able to use the monitor in 1920 x 1080??

I tried the 8.9 Solution and here is what I did:

Hooked up the computer to the Samsung LN32A650 with HDMI.

Got 1920x1080p but it does not look very good and the picture only occupies 2/3rd of the screen.

Then I installed the 8.9 Catalyst Control Center and rebooted.

I then hooked up my VGA connection and rebooted.

The picture comes up as before @ 1920 x 1080 and occupies the full screen.

I thought - Great problem solved.

I installed some utilities and other software (this is a brand new Windows 7 Ultimate installation).

Shut down the computer, it said that it was installing an update and I let it continue.

Started up the computer and guess what:

MODE NOT SUPPORTED

Does anybody else have any suggestions?

I do not really want to use the HDMI output as the picture it gives is really poor and the picture does not occupy full screen anyway.

Or can some kind soul point me to some HDMI patch that might solve the quality issues.

This is a real show stopper for me as Windows Vista and XP has worked on this setup without any problems.

I did not see your post until after mines. As you can see, 8.9 worked at 1920 x 1080 just once.

As soon as I shut down, I had the same problem again.

I have an HIS ATI Radeo 4670 512MB PCIe Adapter and am running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64 Bit Version 7600.

Here is what I did to fix it. After trying at least 20 different drivers from ATI's site, I finally ended up going to HIS site.

Download | HIS Graphic Cards

I downloaded the driver with this description:

Platform: Windows Vista (32bit/64bit)
VISTA Driver Verison: Vista_8.523-080808a-068036C-ATI with WHQL Note: Users must have Microsoft's .NET Version 1.1 Framework prior to installing the ATI driver/Catalyst Control Centre(CCC) components

The file name is:

Vista_8.523-080808a-068036C-ATI.zip

This is the Vista driver for an ATI 4670 512 mb PCIe adapter.

Uncompress the file.

1. Boot into Safe Mode.

2. Execute the following from a command prompt to turn on the Windows Installer Service:

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"
net start msiserver

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"
net start msiserver

3. Execute the following from a command prompt to isable Driver Signing:

bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

4. Open the Device Manager.

5. Left Click and expand "Display adapters".

6. Right Click on the Display Adapter. Example: (ATI Radeon HD 4670)

7. Left Click Update Driver Software.

8. Left Click "Browse my computer for driver software"

9. Left Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".

10. When the window with the prompt "Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware." comes up, uncheck "Show compatible hardware".

11. Left Click "Have Disk".

12. Browse to the directory: "C:\Drivers\ATI\Support\Vista_8.523-080808a-068036C-ATI\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF" and click on the inf file "CH_68036.inf"

(That's where I put the uncompressed driver files.)

13. Select your adapter (if necessary).

14. Follow prompts and reboot.

You should now be able to select 1920 x 1080 using your VGA cable.

I uninstalled all ATI software including CCC
I downloaded only the ATI 8.9 Vista 64bit driver from ATI
I then installed the driver while the Samsung Monitor was connected with HDMI.
Shut down the computer
Reconnected to the Samsung LN32A650 with VGA cable.
Instructed Windows 7 to only download and update with my permission from Windows Update
Reboot the computer and it comes up with 1920 x 1080@ 60Hz.


BTW,after installing the 8.9 driver, HDMI looks even worse. So if you have to use HDMI, 9.10 is the better driver to use, but even with that, it does not look as good as the old VGA connection.

When using the HDMI connection, you might want to set you DPI for fonts to about 112. It helps, but is still not great.

I have partially fixed the solution of getting my Samsung LN32A650 to work with my Radeon 4850 by using VGA.

This was due to the fact that HDMI did not produce very good quality with my display.

Can anybody point me to a thread or threads which would give a solution of better quality using the HDMI connection with an HDTV?
