Windows 7: Horizontally Stretched Desktop Resolution

    Windows 7 Professional
    Dell 2209WA Monitor

I used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer with the same monitor above.

Yesterday Windows 7 Professional was installed.

The display of the desktop is horizontally stretched. Circular icons are now oblong, fonts in various applications are stretched sideways.

When I press the menu button on the monitor itself to adjust the settings I can find a "Wide Mode" option. I can either select that, or deselect that. If I deselect that the label changes to "4:3" with no options to adjust that ratio. Deselecting "Wide Mode" gets rid of the graphical distortion, but the display of the desktop stops sort of the edges of the screen, but about an inch on the right and left sides.

I tried switching to every other screen resolution available and none of the other resolutions helped the issue. I also went to the Dell site and installed a new driver, no dice

I'm new to Windows 7, it looks like many things are switched around.

I don't mine posting more information about my machine, but I will need help in where to find it.

Could this be a driver issue?

Thanks much in advance for any help or information.

    Steve

    Update:

I went to the Dell site and installed a new driver for my monitor. Zero difference. I also tried all available resolutions.

The monitor goes completely dark if I try connecting it with "digital mode"

Have you tried updating the graphics drivers? I too think its a driver problem, but try graphics this time.

That sounds like a good move, but I don't know how to do that.

How do I determine what graphics drivers I need, where do I find the drivers and how do I install the driver?
