Just to add to that, best to use the video card driver that the actual manufacturer of the card advises, FIRST.

Having to reload driver after a game install, probably replaced Direct-X related file(s) they shouldn't have during the game install.

So many .dll/.ocx files are added/overwritten if you do a lot of installs, in C:\Windows\System32 and/or C:\Windows\SysWOW64 [Check those 2 directories out, don't delete anything though, you only have both if using 64-bit 7]
it's amazing more stuff isn't broken regularly over these common use/programming shortcut shared files, used by developers.

You can tell if it's been added by comparing the dates, the oldest will be when the OS was installed, for the most part, just looked and older still were DX9 and DX10 files all installed later for older game compatibility, since 7 is Direct-X 11 based, even if your Video card is not. [Vista is DX10 | XP is DX9]
