    New Hd 6770


    I just bought a Hd 6770 and installed in a second computer. Sometimes the graphics card will turn off or there is no display on my monitor. When the computer boots the fan sounds like its running at full speed. When the graphics does work I hear it run a full speed then then it running at the speed it would be at idel and repeats several times alternating between the two speeds. When I installed the hd 6770 in another computer, I never had these problems. Installed drivers and updated windows. Windows 7 x64

    Check the pci lane and make sure it's clean. Also make sure the psu connector to the card is firmly seated, on both ends if your psu is modualr.

    Ya I just air dusted the PCI slot. Its not modular psu but the psu is kinda old so I doesn't have any 6 pin connectors so I have an adapter. I double checked the adapter and and the 6 pin connector. The psu is a 380w and when I check several calculators they recommened at least a 360-370w. Is that okay?

    I'm going to say yes, you need a new power supply. While you can go by psu calculators, vendor pc's tend to have weak psu's. I would recommend you look at newegg for a new one. I would look at corsair, seasonic or antec psu's.

    Oh its not a venders psu. The vendors psu actually went bad. The current psu I got it a frys electronics and I bought this like about 4-6 years ago. I'll probably upgrade the psu though.

    That is a little old for a psu. What are the specs on it? Usually you need one with higher amps on the 12v rail.

    Yeah, the 12volt rail is a little low. I don't remember the exact required for the 6770, but I would get a psu with at least 35- 40 amps for it.

    Until you get other recommendations, I think this one is good choice.

    Agree that PSU is probably degraded and not able to handle it.

    I'd get an even higher WATT PSU at this point so you have MORE flexibility, only will actually use what your equipment draws.
