The 5 series are old now, you either want a 6 or wait til the 7 series comes out, personally, You should go for a 660 or higher if you can afford it.

Hi many thanks, as for cost I have gone for a Gainwood Geforce GTX 580 Phantom 3072MB card, next month I may add another.

A 580 SLI setup should keep you gaming at high for quite a while. Enjoy mate :)

I knew the 2GPU card was a SLI config, but I didn't know if that's how boards saw it or not.
From memory, x2 cards are 'always on SLI/CF'. The mobo would have seen the cards - maybe have allowed 3-way SLI (not sure though) but the 4'th core would be unused, if the 2nd card was allowed to be SLIed to begin with. I vaguely recall people having lots of dramas with x2 295's and getting the second card active.

    OP chose the best option.

Thanks, and it was all down to everyones advice on here. I will eventually go the sandybridge route money pending. From the specs I have, what would you say is a bottleneck, I mean would running SLI 580's along with 3.8ghz be okay ?
