Windows 7 upgrade from XP ... Cannot update graphics driver

Unable to update my graphics drivers. HP doesn't have an update because my Compac is outdated.

My graphic card was VIA km400 8bits. Please help me.

Hello Chris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I just don't see any Windows 7 drivers available for the VIA KM400.

Other than using the generic drivers, it may be time to upgrade to a more up to date graphics card.

Welcome aboard SF! bmiller9 I would tend to agree Brink immediately with the need for a much newer card. There still is one option to consider however being a look at the support site to see if that has any Vista drivers since they will usually work on 7 as well.

If the system is too old however and never any for Vista made available then the hardware change will be the "must have" solution. In the long run that will also make things much easier for you.

System specs of the computer in question,

Product Specifications Compaq Presario SR1130NX Desktop PC | HP® Support

There are no Vista drivers, XP only. Also according to the specs it is limited to 1 GB of ram.

As far as adding a video card, I would recommend against it unless you can find a very cheap AGP card that has at least Vista drivers. Then again unless it is less that $20-30 it isn't worth doing as (sad to say) the card will end up costing more than the computer is worth.

In this instance you would be better served sticking with XP until such a time as you can buy a new(er) computer.

What's your preference for refurbishing Radeon or NVidia? Radeon HD 4000 or GeForce 6 series? You can still find AGP cards running from $40-$60 if you plan to continue running with the same system simply to keep it going.

Newegg has several cards instock at the moment seen at Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Video Cards & Video Devices, Desktop Graphics Cards, AGP 4X/8X

Out of those the best of the bunch would be the EVGA card for $42.99 seen at EVGA 512-A8-N403-LR GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 AGP 8X Video Card - Newegg.com

Windows 8(32bit and 64bit alike) is also supported for this model card. EVGA | Products | e-GeForce 6200 AGP | 512-A8-N403-LR

That's the cheapest way out until you either buy or build a much newer system.
