    Hi beetlespin, Welcome to Sevenforums.

I think when you are playing games or running CAD, your laptop is not switching to AMD card automatically as it should be. From your system specs, you have HP laptop. We will appreciate if you can also mention the model number of that. Its not AMD's issue. Go to HP's website and download the video driver from there. AMD simply releases a generic driver, It is up to HP to make the driver for your laptop. AMD switchable graphics is only turned on when using a AMD Vision system, and due to your Intel CPU it is NOT a AMD Vision system. So HP MUST go into the driver, and edit some code to turn it on with a Intel CPU, then release it to you. So turn your laptop upside down and find the product number usually looks something like this: AB123CDE#ABA.

Also, update your Intel HD drivers from Intel website.

The freezing of your computer could be not just a video problem. You may want to check out your services, how many you have running and how much of those services are consuming your resources. You can check this through the Task Manager / Performance / Resource Monitor / Overview and you can go from there by tracing down what is taking up much of you disk and CPU and memory. Also you may also want to scan for malware and root kits as they also can cause freezing of your system. Just some suggestions.

It's in the DV6 range going by the manual - can't work out which one exactly.

I've tried updating drivers. my computer came with catalyst control center, I tried updating that. the drivers say they are updated, but CCC says it is not compatible with my graphics adapter or something?
That "may" be due to the installer not noticing the 6770M, but rather seeing the Intel iGPU instead.

Where did you download the CCC drivers - HP's site or from AMD directly?

As Archer mentioned, it's up to HP to edit their drivers for your device.

The lag/freeze could indeed be a failure of switching from the iGPU to the discrete 6770M

when this first began I thought it was having overheating issues so I installed a higher quality thermal paste, which keeps the temps lower, but didn't make the freezing stop.
The behavior isn't indicative of heat, so you are fine there.

To determine which card is actually being used (intel or the 6770M), download GPU-Z

Run two instances of it, one for each detected card (intel HD 3000) and (6770M). The one showing all the "load", "usage" etc is obviously the one in use.

That will help determine if the switching is working as it should.

Does the lag/freeze only occur with Chrome or all applications? AutoCAD, Games etc
