Forcing a Larger Resolution - is it safe?

Hello everyone who's interested or has something to say,

Here's the scenario - I own a laptop with NVIDIA GPU and a screen that has native resolution of 1680x945 (18.4'' screen). Using NVIDIA's control panel I was able to force the resolution to 2880x1620 which is pretty much the double of display's native resolution.

Now, the whole thing doesn't look too bad, it has the same ratio and isn't stretched - it's a lil blurry and all that tiny writing is a lil hard to see, I've been using it like that for some time, and I got used to it. I really am wiling to give up the quality for twice the working space.

Here's my question - is it safe to force my GPU to work twice as hard? It seems pretty stable, the temperatures are just fine for a laptop, but the warning from NVIDIA's control panel has been worrying me for a while now.

Alrightie, a peace of mind is what I needed. I'll keep my eye on those temps, it's not like I'm planning to play any games on such enormous resolution, so it'll all be fairly cool.

As long as the temperatures are OK and the refresh rate is supported by your screen, sure.

The warning is only because it's recommended to use the native screen resolution for quality reasons (text gets "blurry" as you said). If you had a 2880*1620 screen you'd have no warning.

Well, that clears things up, thank you. I was worried there was some more serious reason for the warning other than esthetics (looks).

Just out of curiosity, what could happen if I were using a higher refresh rate than supported?

Of course, HWMonitor reports temperatures from 40-50°C when using forced resolution. I know my laptop well and as long as graphics stay below 65°C I think I'm safe. I totally agree with you though, it is incredible how hot those things can get sometimes.

LOL. Bad things. It could kill your screen panel (effectively frying it). But I don't think you can force the refresh rate with regular software, your screen should automatically limit the rate to its max whatever the input.

That's good to know, thanks. I was actually messing with the refresh rate few weeks ago, didn't do anything so I guess it is the screen that limits it for its own safety, which is good.
