BSOD and blank/black screen with FX5200 on Windows 7

Hi!

Recently I recuperated and old computer that would go to the trash, I installed successfully Windows XP SP3 on it and works great, but, now the XP life ended and I decided to install Windows 7 on it.

Here the specs:

Motherboard: First International Computer/FIC FA15T
Graphics card: Inno3D FX5200 128Mb AGP
Processor: Intel Pentium 3 1Ghz PGA370
DVD drive: Samsung SH-S182D
Power supply: Generic WiseCase 250W

All works, except, of course, the video card! Originally, they comes with a Pine 3D SIS 315 32MB video card, I was able to get it working under Windows 7 with the XP drivers and the system was fine.

So, I changed it to a FX5200 because I watched some youtube videos showing it working with aero in Windows 7 (because they have Directx 9.0), but now, I can't get it working properly.

Here some drivers that I tested:

96.85 for Vista -> the most recommended video driver, causes BSOD with nvlddmkm.sys 0x00000116 and a buggy black flashing screen, after that the system freezes.
9719 from Guru3D for Vista -> I get a buggy flashing black screen, after this or the system freezes or the monitor turns off.
175.19 for XP -> the setup doesn't start in compatibility mode, unable to test, but worked in XP.
195.62 for vista -> same thing as 9719 does.

One of the XP drivers worked in W7, but without aero and a very bad performance, when I try to play any video file the system causes a BSOD with nv4_mini.sys.

Hey aless. So you say, you had first one GPU (Pine3D), and then, you changed it to Inno3D, then you installed the drivers for this second GPU (Inno3D). all in the same OS?, that's bound to get you some problems in the future, because a search about those BSODs gave me info related to drivers for video cards (nvlddmkm.sys and nv4_mini.sys), are you in a position to do a fresh, clean install?:
Clean Install Windows 7
or maybe could you revert to the functioning card and check those BSOD dumps?, you could check them yourself with an utility like BlueScreenView:
Blue screen of death (STOP error) information in dump files.
Or you could use that program to extract them so an expert here can take a look. Although I'm not an expert, I think it's driver related.

I modified some of bios AGP parameters and the VGA started to work! With aero and glass!

That's what I modified:

"AGP-4X Mode" from enabled to disabled.

Now the video card is working, but only with AGP 2X, for FX5200, will have any performance drop?

Well, all back-wards compatibilities come with some loss due to the "adjustment" to a previous tech, so I'm guessing you may not have 100% power, but that depends too on the particular model and piece of hardware, so yes, you may experience some drop of quality, but how much would you?, that really I'm not sure. But now you could try to do some benchmarking, and since you have now the most recent drivers, I guess you would be good now. It's always great to recycle PC parts which otherwise would go to waste, but damn it's sometimes hard, isn't it?.
