Hey mate, i dont think theres any such thing as an External GPU. Both my GPU's add up to around the same performance as yours, maybe slightly less and i still feel i can play most games on lowest:) some on medium-high but few and far between. Laptops arent really meant for gaming unless its a top end laptop but even then your paying double the price for the same spec you could get in a desktop.

Actually there are eGPU's. Here there is 11000 posts about it:
    Graphics Card Forum, eGPU
That it doesn't always work, when and if it works it's only on external monitor and performance is never stellar, it's another story alltogether. But with new fast i/o interfaces, like thunderbolt it could become viable option. I would love to have eGPU for my laptop, too bad my laptop doesn't have any fast i/o I could use for it.

Good chance that if they were to come into major contention is that the CPU the user also has would probably struggle to run the card.

Actually my laptop cpu is faster than my quad core desktop at work, so as long as i/o can keep up, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Also outside GPU would be much easier to cool, even water cooling would be piece of cake and that would create better thermals for CPU.

I wasnt meaning it would be the case for everyone, but the vast majority, my brother has an AMD phenom 2 x6 1100t clocked at 3.7ghz and it still has a small bottleneck on his 3gb sapphire 280x..
