Why does my GTX 770 freeze when I play GTA IV at high settings?

I have 790MB of resource usage available. What is wrong here? I had the Vsync turned off and on, but still the GPU freezes. Could the problem be the texture filter quality?

    Provide more details:
    • How long after you start does it freeze?
    • Do any other games freeze? Try running Crysis or something.
    • What makes you think it's the GPU and not some other issue?
    • What happens when you run the game on low settings?
    • What version of the graphics driver are you using? Current WHQL version is 337.91.
    • What version of GTA IV are you playing? Is it up to date?

Based on your very limited information, here are some things to try:
    1. Pull the cover off and get all the dust out of the entire case using compressed air.
    2. Put GTA IV in Windowed mode and watch the case temp gauges.
    3. If the temp gauges run hot (say 50 deg C) take the case cover off, point a large fan at the box and turn it on full power. Run the game. See if the temperature goes down. Does the game run smoothly?
    4. If heat is the issue, and dusting doesn't fix it, go buy more case fans, screw them in, and connect them to either fan mounts on the motherboard or to the power supply. Bottom and front fans bring air in. Top, back, and side fans push hot air out of the case. Make sure your cables are tied together neatly so they don't interrupt airflow. Also, get some magnetic fan dust covers to keep the inside of the machine cool.
    5. Update your graphics driver.
    6. Make sure your motherboard BIOS is also up to date.
    7. Before starting GTA, run task manager and make sure to kill any unnecessary processes that might be conflicting with it. You may even wish to turn off your antivirus if you're running one.
