ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 driver fix (Working)

If you have a laptop with switchable graphics and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 (AMD Radeon HD 6550M) graphic card there is one line solution to the problem of graphic card drivers not updating or working, which is:

"DO NOT INSTALL UPDATES FROM AMD OFFICIAL WEBSITE"

    Part 1: Understanding the problem

Before I tell you the solution lets first understand the cause of problem:

Only few people know that ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 which belongs to Radeon HD 6000M series is a renamed or modified version of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 which belongs to Radeon HD 5000 series, so it is a major bug in the updater software from AMD official website as it try to update your graphic card driver it misunderstood the identity of your graphic card as Radeon HD 5650 and installs the driver for this series because both graphic cards have same Chip Type id 0x68C1.

Now as 5000 series supports DirectX 10 and 6000 series supports DirectX 11, when the installed drivers are wrong your ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 graphic card will not work properly, switchable graphics will not work, you can still play some games but latest games like COD Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs which requires DirectX 11 will not work on your computer although your graphic card is capable of running these games as it have 1Gb graphic memory.

Part 2: Solution to the problem

If you have updated your ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 drivers from AMD official website, just to make you realize that you have installed the wrong drivers type dxdiag in cmd and click the Display tab, if it is showing ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 as an identity of your graphics you are having a problem. Now follow these steps to solve this problem.

    1. goto control panel and Express Uninstall Catalyst Control Centre (CCC) from your computer. Follow this guide to uninstall it completely from your computer

How-To Uninstall AMD Catalyst Drivers From A Windows Based System

    2. once you have uninstalled CCC restart your computer and go to your laptop manufacturer website and search for drivers for you laptop.

"Only download the graphic drivers from your manufacturer's official website"

For my HP pavilion dv6 3226tx following is the driver page, HP users may try this driver package but recommended is to download it from your own laptop homepage.

Software & driver downloads HP Pavilion dv6-3226tx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

    3. After downloading drivers from your manufacturer, just install them and you have solved your problem.

    4. To verify your drivers there are two methods, first is again type dxdiag in cmd and in Display tab now it should show ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 and for DirectX version it should be DDI version 11 on the right column.

Second method is open CCC and select information centre>>hardware and there it will show you the identity of your graphic card as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 and some other technical specifications.

For my laptop the CCC version is 2010 but Catalyst version is latest 14.4, So if it is same with you just don't worry and open CCC, select information centre>>software, if it shows catalyst version 14.4 or some other latest, any game which requires catalyst version 13.6 or higher will work properly.

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 3226tx laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 graphic card and had same issues for almost one year but now I have found the solution and my graphic card is working properly and I have played COD Ghost without any problem or lag.

What do you mean ''5000 series supportes DirectX 10?'' ATi made the 5000 series fully supports DirectX 10. We have a bit of misunderstanding here.

Note: They already called the Radeon graphics card to be a part of AMD since the 6000 series got released. Means that it's called AMD Radeon HD 6550 :)

AMD 5000 series supports DirectX 10 so if you have switchable graphics and download drivers from AMD official website, it installs 5000 series drivers for you HD 6550 which supports DirectX 11, so your graphic card will stop supporting DirectX 11 and you cannot play games which require DX11.

It's already understood that any DirectX 11 graphics card will support DirectX 10, except for the low-end range of GPUs which wouldn't fully support it.

    Thank you ucpintel!
I had this very problem with my notebook and thanks to you now I can run Directx 11 games!!!
Another thing to mention anyway is that these Hp drivers have never been updated since 2010, so they're so old that hardly I will get the best out of my notebook anyway... Thanks again! and shame on Hp!!!
