From the above products specs

You have the Intel 4000 processor.

I tried installing (separately) both the Intel and NVIDIA drivers and they both cause the same file corruption issue mentioned in my original I'm not sure where to go from here.

Actually, the more annoying issue is regarding the spacebar key...any ideas why that could be happening?

I used to have a similar problem with my HP laptop, Windows 7 and AMD driver (I upgraded to Win8 about a mnth ago, was offered the AMD driver and installed it - either Win8 or AMD v 13.x worked nicely together)

I rolled the driver back to a version that did not cause any issues (one roll back in my case) and then manually ran Windows Update - when the driver was offered again, I right clicked the offer and hid it.

The space key?

See if the graphics driver is causing that - could be??

Go though your mouse properties and see if there is the option to hide cursor when typing.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Good luck,

Intel GM45 WDDM1.1 driver
I'm not exactly sure where to download Intel's graphics drivers, but a new one was pushed out today through Windows Update. Windows seems a lot more responsive after this update. I will test out multi monitor at work later. Screenshot:
