radeon xpress 200M lastest driver install causes BSOD

I have a crappy radeon xpress 200M card. it's old I know but it is what it is and I can't buy a new one so I have to make due.

I did a clean install of windows 7 on my system and all seemed to work fine until I tried to install catalyst control center. It won't install no matter what version I try and believe me when I say I've probably installed almost all of them.

I'm able to upgrade, rollback, install and uninstall the drivers no problems. In fact I've done it so many times I've lost track of how many times I've done it. Right now I've got driver version 8.451.0.0 running.

I've got cc cleaner installed and have used that to remove previous software. I've also manually removed all instances of ATI, Catalyst and ccc in registry as well as used device manager to remove drivers every time before trying to install new versions.

my problem is ccc will not install no matter what I try. I did manage to get one version to install sort of. It installed with no errors but would never run. I've tried the latest version of catalyst all the way down to 6.1.4. I've manually update drivers through device manager and then tried to install ccc as well as tried to install the whole catalyst suite. I've run everything in compatibility mode and as administrator.

so after much frustration I got tired of messing with ccc and switched over to ray adams ATI tray tools. the lastest version doesn't work for me (I think its 1.6.9 or something like that) I had to go back to the 1.3.6 version for it to work.

all I want to do is to connect my vga to svideo adapter to my rf modulator to my svideo cord to my tv so I can watch hulu and the like on the tv instead of my laptop.

I thought it was working at first when I was able to see the green signal light on the modulator but when I opened up the settings on tray tools it showed no other display connected and then it froze up completely. every stinking time I tried it.

so my question is this, do I need a vga to svideo convertor rather than adapter and is there anything I can do ccc wise or tray tools to remedy this situation?

thanks in advance if this sounds stupid.
Kelli

Get driver 8.661 running. Can only help here. CCC should work for you too. Besides, your laptop will thank you.

ATI MobilityModder - DriverHeaven.net

Use http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx for step 3.

Click on ATI Radeon™ Video Card Drivers, get Full Catalyst Software Suite (Recommended).

Why don't you just connect the S-Video adapter to the tv?

I've done this a few times but I don't think I did it with 8.661. I tried mobility modder a couple of times with older drivers so i'm off to give it another go.

well because when I connected the desktop in our office to the tv I had to have a modulator because that tv is sooooo old there's not even those red, white and yellow tulip connections on the front or back. I got that set up working so easy I didn't think I was going to have this much trouble with the laptop and 2nd tv. We did try connecting the vga/svideo adapter to svideo cord directly into the tv (the one that does have svideo jack) and it didn't work so my husband suggested we try getting another modulator. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

I'll let you know if this works. Thanks for the help.

I got as far as step 6 and I got a package install failure error message which if I remember correctly was what I got the other times I tried this method. I'm running as administrator, should I be running in compatibility mode as well?

ok THAT did not work! During installation I got the BSOD and then it rebooted itself. It tried to repair 3 times and couldn't. I ended up having to do a system restore. no updated drivers or ccc.

I. Have. A. Bout. Had. It! I just tried to manually update the driver before running the setup and I get the same problem. I get a blue screen of death, reboot and restore.

Glorious success w/ Xpress 200m driver for Windows 7

I've had to go through similar failures with various methods & drivers in trying to get the Catalyst Control Center working with ATI Radeon Xpress 200m on my crappy old laptop. Windows 7 does automatically detect & provide the driver for the graphics that works well enough but the CCC is missing, and the driver support by the laptop manufacturer, Toshiba has, not surprisingly, stopped all developments long ago at Vista and the driver fails to install at all in Windows 7.

I finally went the modded route & tried some full Catalyst Suites & individual components all without success until I found this bad puppy right here.

Keep in mind that it does need to be modded by the ATI Mobility Modder, and that it is a 32-bit driver. Though I haven't tried, an equivalent 64-bit driver can be found here.

This upgrade works gloriously for my old Toshiba and it is an upgrade in more ways than just an addition of the CCC as the version numbers for 2D Driver, Direct3D, OpenGL, and the driver itself have all jumped up. I realize for most users with this card, this won't mean much either function or performance-wise, but my s-video out never looked as glorious thanks to a few tweaks that can now be accessed in the CCC.

Just thought I'd contribute a little for all the crappy laptop owners stuck with this card. Sorry if it was common knowledge or has been posted already.
