Help me decide whether to use GTX 480 as dedicated PhysX

    Hey all,

I used to use GTX 480 SLI but recently upgraded to single GTX 970 (MSI Gaming G4). I am considering to keep the Zotac AMP Edition as a dedicated PhysX card as it is the cooler running of my 480s. I have a few games that can utilize PhysX ie. Mafia 2, Batman games, Metro 2033.

I did install the 480 10 days ago, but I couldn't run Mafia 2 above 20fps (regardless of PhysX on/off etc, seemed like frames were limited somehow, I have to open a new thread in the games forum later). And decided to remove it to test later.

Can anyone tell me a good way to benchmark the usefulness of the 480 as a dedicated PhysX card please?

Would FluidMark/FurMark stress the GPUs enough to show a meaningful result? Or any other considerations?

    Thank you!

    You can't run a 970 and a 480 in the same system.

It is possible when you want to use GTX 480 as PhysX Processor

Solved the Mafia 2 problem today and went ahead and installed the GTX as physics card.

    Mafia 2
    970 PhysX med - 43.3 fps
    970 PhysX high - 34.4 fps

    480 PhysX med - 79.4 fps
    480 PhysX high - 62.6 fps

    FluidMark 1.5.2
    970 PhysX Preset 720 - 7232/117 min/ 121 max
    970 PhysX Preset 1080 - 3451/ 56 min/ 58 max

    480 PhysX Preset 720 - 7808/ 128 min/ 129 max
    480 PhysX Preset 1080 - 3998/ 65 min/ 67 max

    Batman: Arkham City GOTY
    970 PhysX high - 56 avg/ 87 max
    480 PhysX high - 58 avg/ 94 max

480 is currectly in Pci-E 2 x8 port, I guess it shouldn't hinder the performance?

It shouldn't as your GTX 970 has the most load and the 480 is only tasked on PhysX processing.
