    R9 280X crashing playing games

    Hey.

I recently built a new PC.

    Here is my dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/defrgnWn

    This was my build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/FFTWdC

Whenever I launch a game it will either crash to desktop or give me a blue screen. This only happens when I am using my R9 280X graphics card. As a test, I disconnected the R9 280X and used the on-board graphics and this works fine, though obviously not at the greatest quality.

Curiously, I can play TF2 at the lowest possible resolution, but it crashes as soon as I switch it to 1680x1050 (my native res).

All fans are connected and spinning. All drivers have been updated.

Any help very much appreciated! Thank you.

First of all the Crash log shows no DX installed it's just blank

Note if you kept getting a TDR Time Detection Recovery then i would be inclined to say that card is starting to take a dump but nothing mentions that make sure your virus protection isn't blocking the game either that happens too!

Since you already did the drivers and that didn't try system restore to when it was

Personally if it was me i would test the card on a different unit or a friends and see what it does if you can do that

if it continues though i would run it in for a RMA could be it's starting to go bad that does happen as well

    Thanks for the response.

DX being blank - is this an issue? How do I resolve it?

No virus protection installed. This is a clean install, all brand new components.

I've ordered a replacement so we shall see. Sadly don't have another compatible machine to test with.

    Why do you suggest that?

You can test it with your old PC, nothing wrong with swapping GPUs to see if that really works. Bottlenecks won't matter because you're just gonna test it.

If this is the Dell Dimension in the OP's specs, there may not be enough power coming from the PSU to enable the 280X to work properly. OEM computers like that likely don't come with a 750W PSU which is the minimum rated PSU for a 280X.

EDIT: Arrrgh. Now I see the specs of the build. Still a 500W supply is not enough to power a 280X. You might have to upgrade the PSU before the 280X will run properly.

For anyone who finds this in the future, my solution was to return the card for a replacement. Turns out it was just a faulty card. 500w should be enough to power the card, according to other sites, but I actually switched it out for a 600w just to be sure. Either way, pretty sure the card was just faulty. So if anyone is at their wits ends like I was, get a replacement! :)
