Installed nvidia 1070-now Win7 hangs at login screen-frozen keyboard

My win7 machine was running great until the Nvidia GTX- 480 graphics card failed. I installed a new Nvidia 1070 which has caused the system to stop responding once it gets to the login screen. I have tried restarting in safe mode to change drivers but it does the same thing so it appears that I can't get into the system to do any further troubleshooting. I also tried to do a windows repair but no joy.

My case has hot swappable drive bays and I have two different bootable win7 drives - one for games and one for applications. Both drives do the exact same thing freezing at the login screen. I have also been playing with win10 on a third drive and it boots fine as it did before the 1070 installation.

Any ideas how to get win7 running with the 1070? If it's a driver issue, am I going to have to start all over again with a new win7/apps install since I don't know how to get into it now to fix the problem?

As always any help/tips are much appreciated.

Have you tried disconnecting all drives except the one you want booting from?

Does your board have onboard graphics? If so, You could try removing the card altogether and booting using the monitor plugged into that. Then try uninstalling the drivers and installing the newest ones from the Nvidia site.

NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

How did your old card fail exactly? Artifacts on the screen or no display?

Thanks for the replies...My motherboard has no on-board graphics and I only had the Win10 drive installed but I was able to resolve the problem by installing a driver mentioned in another thread I was reading from a person with a an identical problem: v373.06 WHQL
