Video card has stopped responding but has recovered..

Since I have back dated the driver in use I haven't incurred the error. doesn't mean it's fixed but right now it's fine. Yes I know that 'new' doesn't mean it will work perfectly, the chance that's it's bad is still on the table.

Typing to you about it did the trick........... it failed again this time I got no message about the driver not responding. It went blank and the speakers made a continuous humming noise. I will be contacting the vendor to get rid of this POS.!!

Yes well I mentioned before the changes in driver versions can be very subtle and even minimalist as not to be much of an improvement anyway. Plus you have to remember too something as simple as cap going bad can stop any device that it is installed in or attached to another that has a bad cap for it to stop other components from functioning either badly or more commonly not at all.

Hmm don't know quite what to suggest except wait and see I suppose if push comes to shove you could return the card and get something different.


I don’t know what your budget is and the choice is yours but rather than use a card that is really quite low specs I would go for something like one of these as the board as far as I can tell is really quite a decent one. Just out of interest just how old is the board and what is the CPU exactly??

Out of those I would personally pick either the Asus (my own personal choice because I use Asus cards myself) and the EVGA which I have heard the others speak well of. But again the choice and budget are yours mate.

The MOBO is the original Asus Rampage Extreme, that is to say it's has no number after it like 1, 2 or 3. The processor is an Intel Core Quad running @ 2.4Ghz.

The card that was in the board was an Invidia GEForce 8800 GTS. At times the monitor would go blank and say 'NO SIGNAL' I'd have to reboot and then reset some things in the BIOS, that got lost because of a bad shutdown. Finally decided to change the card. That original card was a $300 item at the time, I don't have that sort of money to throw at a new card I'm sorry to say. I have been on disability since 1994 <sigh> I don't play games on the machine, I do a lot of photo editing, plus some music editing as well.

I thought I could get by with a lesser card but of course it has come back to bite me in the butt! I do have a request in to the company that shipped it, through New Egg, it came from a place called SaveMart. I didn't realize that it was a low profile card when it arrived I was a bit taken aback but decided to use it anyway. No one sees it so who cares if its low profile.

Of course you can see the predicament I am in with it being more trouble than the card I removed. At least when it goes off it recovers and doesn't cock up my BIOS, that's about all that's good about it. As you can see on NewEgg I have about $85 invested in this thing already and have had nothing but erratic behavior, clearly you get what you pay for.

I can surely afford the Asus card you are recommending, but it's for PCIe 3.0, my board is only PCIe 2.0 I was warned by New Egg to make sure I got a 2.0 and not a 3.0 card, that's what I was shopping for and another reason I bought what I did. I do not know if 3.0 is backward compatible with 2.0, do you have any insight into that?

Thank you again, I may have to beat on the table as tomorrow the 30 day return period ends with 'Save Mart' thus far I have hear nothing in regard to an RMA.

From what I am reading, a card using PCIe 3.0 wil work in a 2.0 slot but only at 2.0 speeds, that's fine I'll order the card you suggested! If you know otherwise please post and lemme know!

Well Tinsby I am no expert of course but I think the card I linked will be enough to do the photo stuff you mentioned. I have the GTX 650 Ti in my two main desktops and although I do to game as such (because I cannot work out how to get them to work)

I in the main look at the memory of cards when I buy them the other specs like clock speed are important but I suspect only for gaming purposes. Now I think that because it is a 3.0 card and the board is 2.0 may if you gamed cause some issues like flickering when gaming but I think highly unlikely - I am not real sure but it is a thought to be aware of. The other thing is to keep an eye on the temp of the board because that card does draw 75W of power direct from the board so just be aware of that too.

Ok great to hear things have settled. Well as for the return item it always is a pain as none of those sellers/dealers like doing it and when they do it is as slow as they can make it. Which as you say doesn't overly impress one to shop there again eh?
