Hmm nice CPU JT my tester has the Q 9650 and they are ripper little cores eh? The only thing is and I don’t suppose it matters but the board CPU support list doesn’t list it. If you ever have to swap it out this is the listing. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/RA.../HelpDesk_CPU/ < scroll down the list until they start at Core 2 Quad Q6400 and go to Core 2 Quad Q9650 – the one I have.

The BIOS mate is only one behind the latest and it is for fixing fans speeds or some such stuff so not worth mucking around with it and it can be dodgy to do so anyway.

Good you have n’t got the Magician software on board too. Now just so I still have it right the SSD is a dual boot 7 and Linux??

When you have chance can you post a screen shot of the Disk Management screen a better one would be if you can get the Partition Wizard shot just want to see how that disk is partitioned up as I would imagine there would need to be drivers for NVidia in each OS??
I have just toyed with Zorin and I tiread to get NVivdia drivers installed but it greyed out telling me the Zorin (Linux) based ones were better.
My assumption was the both Windows and Linux had to have the same graphics driver?? If so - is one OS messing with the other?? Never come across this before.

If I am away a bit I am having problems posting here as my trpelies keep disappearing

    It never ends

    ICIT3LOL,

Yesterday after taking out the mismatched RAM the machine ran basically ALL day with no faults at all. Slower yes of course, but no errors. Fast forward to today and as soon as I woke the thing from standby, I was greeted with the same error.

At least we know it's not overheating !!!

You are correct in that Linux uses it's own driver, another thing is that Linus Torvald ( the Linux guy) HATES Nvidia, in fact there's a YouTube vid that shows him chastising the company. I'd go with whatever driver Linux seems to like, it may not be the proprietary one for your card so don't be surprised.

All noted about the BIOS, that's one thing I don't like to fool with you can really hose the system if it goes awry. Plus it's worked all these years why trouble now?

The Disc Management capture is attached, it might be better, if you are curious if I was to take a screen grab from "G-Parted' the Linux partition program, this will show better how the EXT 4 partitions are allocated. As we know Windows can't 'see' Linux, but the reverse is true!

    Cheers and thanks!

Ok didn't that about that fellow but just reaffirms what I thought because I couldn't get Zorin to use NVidia. I don't know why because NVidia in my mind knocks spots off the AMD stuff.

Yes mate that would be good because I really don't have much of an idea of what stuff like that goes on in the Linux stuff.

Now have you got Partition Wizard on your machine?? because it is in my mind more useful than the Windows Disk Management some might not agree though . Install MiniTool Partition Wizard Successfully a screen shot using that would be good.

Now you can dig around in the drives and more importantly the partitions with this program by right clicking on the partition for example and go to "Explore" it will open up everything by degrees. See my pic for the GUI it comes up with - plus it is an easier tool - again for me to do things with the drive and partitions
(example resizing) instead of the Windows feature - have a toy with it and you will see what I mean.

A useful tool to have if you have not got it already.

    ICIT3??LOL!!

    ICIT2LOL, ThrashZone,

After running a multitude of test programs, including HwInfo, Speccy, 3DMark, MEMtest, I have finally got the thing sorted. I also removed the MOBO from the chassis and reseated and cleaned in necessary all connections from the PSU to the board. I also removed 2 mismatched 1GB memory cards. I plan to get ALL new memory and toss out the older stuff.

Finally the machine is running w/o a hitch (touch wood) and I hope it continues. I am grateful for all the help and advice I got from the forum. As a side note I am using the driver# 375.70.

Can I say it was one thing that was causing it? No I can't but it's irrelevant now as all is well.

    Thanks to all,

Good to hear JT so glad the thing is going well and perhaps the deconstruction has got something fixed.

Anyway in case things do go awry you know where we are.

The problem returns, I guess it was never gone :(

ICITLOL and others who've tried to help...

Sorry to report the problem is still there, in spite of all the interest and attempts to fix it it still goes black and gives me the " Driver xxx has stopped responding but has recovered."

I even changed to another HD that had a copy of 7, that I knew was fine, on it. Lo and behold not 3 hours into running it I get the same bleeding error message and black screen. So it's clearly not the OS being corrupted or missing files...

So I feel I am left with 2 things being the trouble... the PSU or the Motherboard.

New RAM, new Vid card did nothing to solve it! Best thing is I can use Linux with no trouble at all it runs fine on either drive!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What demands are being put on the PSU or the MB or both by W7, that Linux is immune to or ignoring?

ANSWER: Linux ignores the TDRDELAY that was put in Windows since Vista. This explains why all my Linux versions run fine and don't freeze or lockup. I notice no delays, if they are there they are minuscule!

At this point if I didn't have so many programs that I like and depend on in 7 I'd stay with Linux and we'd not be having this discussion at all!

We are all scratching our collective heads over this one and I for one am totally sick of it! <sigh>

    Thanks to all,

    J T

JT I don't think software would necessarily put a strain on the PSU as such you could use this to calculate what size you need just type in the components as best you can and it will give you a rough figure in watts of the size PSU you need with a little bit of leeway. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

Don't know if I have mentioned but you could sue this or a digital multimeter to check the rail volts.

    UsingHW Info

    PARTA:

Youcan test the volts on the PSU with HW Info https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php < download the right bit version and close the right hand windowselect Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you willsee what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section(Nuvoton)with VBATT as a dead give away you are in the section for the railvoltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up oftenis ITE(sometimesthe usual one for Gigabyte boards)

Nowthe voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of whatis required or the machine will not work properly if at all.

    Limits+/- (minimum - correct - maximum)

    12v1 = 11.4 - 12 - 12.6v

    12v2 = 11.4 - 12- 12.6v

    5v = 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v

    3.3v= 3.135 – 3 – 3.465v

    -12v= -10.80 - -12 - -13.20v

    +5VSB= 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v

ThePower good signal voltage at pin 8 on the 24 pin plug (grey cable) should be the same as the 5v rail reading/s

Seethis for the rail voltage info

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,3061.html(Section 2.)

Theoriginal right hand window shows the machine running and is handy forthat but for looking at the components in some detail close it anduse the main left hand side panel

    FOROTHER COMPONENTS

    PARTB:

Openeach small square with + in it on the section the components are inand then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight inblue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of detailsincluding brands speeds and other essential info that particulardevice. See pic for example.

Since the problem remains I complied this list of things done...

    Everyone,

Here is a list of things I have tried, and items that have been changed to alleviate the "TDR" error message. Note that these are in no particular order! Specific message is " Driver xxx.xx has stopped responding but has recovered" OR in place of the driver number it can be 'nvlddmkm' has stopped...etc. etc..

Multiple instances of various anti virus programs and malware programs have been used all came up with nothing.

Random multiple instances of CHKDSK---NOTHING FOUND

Ran Mem Test for over eight passes---NOTHING FOUND

Ran "SFC /scannow" ----- no missing files found

Replaced all RAM memory--- problem remained

Replaced graphics card, followed instructions to the letter and installed NUMEROUS new and old video drivers---NO CHANGES

Ran extensive tests on motherboard including,Speccy, HWinfo,

Furmark, Firestrike 3D Mark were run on the graphics card ----- ALL OK

Ran multiple tests on PSU voltages -------- all are within tolerance

Removed and re-seated all connections to the motherboard

Cleaned the dust from all cooling fans inside computer case

Tried a registry hack to modify the parameters for "TDR"---not successful

Did extensive research on various solutions for "TDR" ----- not successful thus far

Changed hard drives to one that had a good working troulbe free installation of Windows 7----Problem remained

Changed back to my current version of Windows 7 on my SSD

It should be noted that this problem started occurring with my original Nvidia graphics card, changing to a newer card made no difference. Previous Nvidia GTX 8600 was especially sensitive to what drivers were being used. For instance, when the machine was put on standby, or sleep, upon waking many times I would get a BSOD, this new graphics card does allow me to the machine on standby and successfully wake it up.

At this point I am of the opinion that a component or components has failed on the motherboard. But I cannot justify replacing the motherboard, processor, more new memory, and probably a new operating system like Windows 10. If there is a bright side to any of this it is the fact that Linux Mint performs flawlessly. This OS resides on the same SSD that Windows 7 does, and of course is using the same components on the Asus motherboard. The difference between Linux and Windows 7 is that Linux doesn't care about the "TDR ". I'm sure whatever is causing it doesn't go away when I use Linux, it is simply being ignored by that operating system. The damnable part of all this is the fact that there have been times when Windows 7 would run almost a week without any errors. But yet on the next startup it would give the error "Windows kernel driver 375.70 I stopped responding but has recovered." It's either that or in place of the kernel driver number it says that " nvlddmkm driver has stopped responding....etc".

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on what I may have missed please advise me that this point I am at a loss.

    Thanks to all!

Which one of the choices do you want me to make?

    ICIT2LOL & others,

Thanks for the information but there are at least 3 choices of dump files that I can make... which one of the 3 do you want me to configure?

Mini Dump ( already set for that and I get nothing when I incur the driver/TDR error message )

    Kernel Memory Dump

    Complete memory dump

Thanks for the attention but I need to know which one is important to the discussion. When I do get a BSOD and that's rare, I use Blue Screen View to read it fwiw.
