Video card has stopped responding but has recovered..

Hmm nice CPU JT my tester has the Q 9650 and they are ripper little cores eh? The only thing is and I don’t suppose it matters but the board CPU support list doesn’t list it. If you ever have to swap it out this is the listing. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/RA.../HelpDesk_CPU/ < scroll down the list until they start at Core 2 Quad Q6400 and go to Core 2 Quad Q9650 – the one I have.

The BIOS mate is only one behind the latest and it is for fixing fans speeds or some such stuff so not worth mucking around with it and it can be dodgy to do so anyway.

Good you have n’t got the Magician software on board too. Now just so I still have it right the SSD is a dual boot 7 and Linux??

When you have chance can you post a screen shot of the Disk Management screen a better one would be if you can get the Partition Wizard shot just want to see how that disk is partitioned up as I would imagine there would need to be drivers for NVidia in each OS??
I have just toyed with Zorin and I tiread to get NVivdia drivers installed but it greyed out telling me the Zorin (Linux) based ones were better.
My assumption was the both Windows and Linux had to have the same graphics driver?? If so - is one OS messing with the other?? Never come across this before.

You are correct in that Linux uses it's own driver, another thing is that Linus Torvald ( the Linux guy) HATES Nvidia

Ok didn't that about that fellow but just reaffirms what I thought because I couldn't get Zorin to use NVidia. I don't know why because NVidia in my mind knocks spots off the AMD stuff.

Yes mate that would be good because I really don't have much of an idea of what stuff like that goes on in the Linux stuff.

Now have you got Partition Wizard on your machine?? because it is in my mind more useful than the Windows Disk Management some might not agree though . Install MiniTool Partition Wizard Successfully a screen shot using that would be good.

Now you can dig around in the drives and more importantly the partitions with this program by right clicking on the partition for example and go to "Explore" it will open up everything by degrees. See my pic for the GUI it comes up with - plus it is an easier tool - again for me to do things with the drive and partitions
(example resizing) instead of the Windows feature - have a toy with it and you will see what I mean.

A useful tool to have if you have not got it already.

Sorry to report the problem is still there, in spite of all the interest and attempts to fix it it still goes black and gives me the " Driver xxx has stopped responding but has recovered."

I even changed to another HD that had a copy of 7, that I knew was fine, on it. Lo and behold not 3 hours into running it I get the same bleeding error message and black screen. So it's clearly not the OS being corrupted or missing files...

So I feel I am left with 2 things being the trouble... the PSU or the Motherboard.

New RAM, new Vid card did nothing to solve it! Best thing is I can use Linux with no trouble at all it runs fine on either drive!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What demands are being put on the PSU or the MB or both by W7, that Linux is immune to or ignoring?

ANSWER: Linux ignores the TDRDELAY that was put in Windows since Vista. This explains why all my Linux versions run fine and don't freeze or lockup. I notice no delays, if they are there they are minuscule!

At this point if I didn't have so many programs that I like and depend on in 7 I'd stay with Linux and we'd not be having this discussion at all!

We are all scratching our collective heads over this one and I for one am totally sick of it! <sigh>

JT I don't think software would necessarily put a strain on the PSU as such you could use this to calculate what size you need just type in the components as best you can and it will give you a rough figure in watts of the size PSU you need with a little bit of leeway. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

Don't know if I have mentioned but you could sue this or a digital multimeter to check the rail volts.

Youcan test the volts on the PSU with HW Info https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php < download the right bit version and close the right hand windowselect Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you willsee what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section(Nuvoton)with VBATT as a dead give away you are in the section for the railvoltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up oftenis ITE(sometimesthe usual one for Gigabyte boards)

Nowthe voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of whatis required or the machine will not work properly if at all.

Limits+/- (minimum - correct - maximum)

12v1 = 11.4 - 12 - 12.6v

12v2 = 11.4 - 12- 12.6v

5v = 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v

3.3v= 3.135 – 3 – 3.465v

-12v= -10.80 - -12 - -13.20v

+5VSB= 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v

ThePower good signal voltage at pin 8 on the 24 pin plug (grey cable) should be the same as the 5v rail reading/s
