Monitor in duplicate mode with laptop keeps going black

I work with a laptop, but need to read a bigger screen. I connect an external monitor with the 15 pin plug and that has worked for a couple years. Now after running a while the external monitor just goes black. I've seen postings here where the screen flickers black. Mine is not a flicker. It's black most of the time later. Every now and then it flickers to life or it comes up duplicating my laptop or with simply my desktop picture for a few seconds, either. Sometimes the external monitor indicates that there is "no signal" When I hook up a different monitor it acts exactly the same way, so the monitors are consistent. And I can use those monitors on other PCs, no prob. I updated my CTI driver. No help. Also, before the monitor problem, had another issue with hooking up my TV using my HDMI plug. That used to work fine, but stopped working completely. TV detects that a new device was plugged in via HDMI, but then give the error message "no signal". Not sure if these two things are related? Are they? No idea where to go from here.
