Windows 7: Monitor numbering with multiple monitors

Monitor numbering with multiple monitors

I've just today connected my HD TV as a second monitor on my system. Most of the time, I've got my system set to "Show desktop only on ..." my original computer monitor, and the TV is off. I turn the TV on & reset the system to "Extend these displays" when I want to watch something on the TV, like a video stored on my hard drive or a live streamed TV broadcast from some web site. I've got it all working now, after some experimenting & trying the various settings to see how they work. But I'm puzzled by the choice the system made in assigning a number to each display. I would have expected my original computer monitor to be assigned the number 1 and the new addition to the system (my HD TV) to be assigned the number 2. But they got numbered the other way round. To me, that's weird. For a while, I thought it was important & was preventing me from getting things just the way I wanted. But I eventually discovered you can drag the monitor icons in the Control Panel dialog for video resolution left to right, right to left, to set the virtual relative position of the two monitors. Still, why did the system pick this apparently backwards way of numbering the monitors?
