HP ProBook. DVI / Monitor not recognized without reboot

HP ProBook. DVI / Monitor not recognized without reboot. Not sure what else to say...integrated graphics...
Laptop is being used in multiple locations, normally without a monitor and then being taken home and plugged in which results in 'no device.' When the laptop is rebooted the device is plugged in. Windows P combo doesn't help...
of course...it worked and now, seemingly for no reason, it doesn't.
Cord should be OK because the monitor will display, it just takes a reboot.

Do you have another type of connection, such as HDMI or VGA, that you could use for connecting the monitor to the computer? This could be a quirk in DVI, and a different type of connection may not have that same issue.

I have found that HDMI has a similar (but different) quirk -- the monitor isn't recognized if I plug it in then turn on the laptop; I have to be in Windows before I plug in the HDMI monitor. However, once Windows has recognized the HDMI monitor, I can power off and on all I want, and it stays recognized.

If this is a quirk in DVI, then HDMI could be a decent alternative for you, because HDMI, like DVI, is high-quality digital video.
