Where does Win7 store the resolution settings?

On a dual-monitor setup, I have problems with windows 7 switching the refresh rate which produces an unreadable display.
It seems that Windows tries to be clever and store the (un-) desired resolution and refresh rate for each monitor.

Where is this store (so I can delete or reset it)?
    Somewhere in the registry?

here is something to check out...
    Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)

if the CRU program itself does not solve your problem, the link above is also the first post in long thread about monitor settings. You might give the thread a browse and make a post in that forum as its full of people who are in the weeds on this topic.

Snick, thanks, I used these 'Advanced' settings to change the refresh rate when I was in 'extended' mode.
But with 'Show only the Monitor' one can not see enough to change anything.

That's why I want to change the settings directly and not through the control panel (and overseeing this chicken-egg-problem is a bug in Windows, IMHO).

Johnhoe, thanks, this looks promising, I'll check it out and report.

What DID help me is the 'Hotkey resolution changer' tool (HRC – HotKey Resolution Changer | funk.eu...hey, it's just me...)

    > Switch to extended Desktop > Assign a hot key to a working resolution and refresh rate > switch to 'projector only' > Hotkey > Monitor readable! > Set to max. resolution with correct refresh > OK finally
