Panasonic tv and pc cannot recognize each other

I have a Panasonic Viera tv TH 50PZ77U bought used but I downloaded the manual and bought a remote. I've been trying in vain to use it as a monitor with my Acer laptop running Windows 7. I've done it in the past with other televisions so I know about the connections, but I just can't get them to recognize each other. I have a router so I can put them on the same network which almost worked except the tv called my device an XboxOne and when I view my network devices there is no television.

The tv only has 2 HDMI ports and no other options. I bought a splitter because I have a Roku and a Fire Stick. But I've tried plugging directly and with extensions to no avail. The other thing that could be an issue is the remote. I think the one I got may not have all of the options. Does no have a source select, but there is one on the side of the tv. Can I make either one "discoverable" ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can't remember what it's called now, but there is a signal in the HDMI stream that can be incompatible with things. It might be the HDCP version. Not sure.

Is the remote meant for that TV? Your choice of source select may be an issue as well. Especially if you can't get to it using the remote. But on the TV it should work since you said there is the button there.

You could try an HDMI to component adapter.
