    Is this an indication of forthcoming doom? Screen goes blank.

    A few weeks ago my Radeon GPU card decided it had had enough and stopped working. I reverted to the onboard intel graphics and although it works fine, I have an unusual happening.
    On boot up, things progress normally until the windows "welcome' screen. The screen then goes blank for up to 30 seconds before my wallpaper appears and icons start loading. Is this something to worry about or just that the MB is trying to do lots of things all at once as part of the boot up process?

    with my old Radeon card, the wallpaper appeared within a couple of seconds of the welcome screen going blank.
    The 'puter is nearly as old as me so it would not surprise me if it is getting near retirement and maybe I should start looking for its ultimate replacement :}

    When the Radeon stopped working, did you physically remove it from the computer? And did you Uninstall the driver(s) for it i.e. AMD Catalyst and the (now probably hidden) AMD Radeon Display Adapter in Device Manager?

    If the puter is expecting still to see a working card, it seems to me that would create problems.

    All my win 7 and 8.1 laptops are slow also, using onboard graphics.

    Thanks!You were correct! I had removed the card and AMD catalyst. Did a search and found a couple of AMD folders hidden away, plus my registry cleaner found some left behind AMD keys. Rebooted and BINGO, taskbar appeared as soon as welcome screen disappeared and wallpaper and icons came up within 5 seconds. Many thanks.

    Have you checked for bent cpu pins or bent cpu socket pins?
