I had some troubles with the 7 beta drivers, having more than 4gb of RAM, but I worked it out with the CCC 9.2's

Do you use Driver Sweeper when changing vid drivers? Some say that's no longer necessary. Some also say you don't even have to uninstall the old drivers any more - just install the new ones over the old. I can tell you that didn't work for me. Installing 9.2 over the WDDM 1.1 drivers resulted in a driver install failure and now I still have 1.1 but my Catalyst Control Center has disappeared.

    I'm going to bed. Grrr.

hmm, I don't know then. Have you tried uninstalling the other drivers first? I just had the supplied windows drivers from WU, I unblocked the installer, ran it as administrator and installed it. restarted, ran the wei, and all was good. Did you try checking Vista SP1 compatibility mode and then install too?

Finally got back to some semblance of normalcy:

*booted to SAFE and ran Driver Sweeper to clean out all the ATI display drivers.
*rebooted and installed the ATI drivers from my DFI mainboard disc.
(at this point, I had the drivers I wanted, but Catalyst Control Center, which I need for overscan adjustment, wasn't showing)
*re-ran the 9.2 ATI drivers - the driver install failed like before, but now I have the new CCC (2009.0203.228.40314)and the old drivers (8.552-081028a-071830C-VisionTek) and everything seems to be working as before.

Interestingly the ATI WDDM 1.1 drivers from Windows Update that initially caused all these problems can't be uninstalled from either Driver Sweeper or Programs and Features. I got the pop-up shown below. Finally killed it in Device Manager (although the update still lurks somewhere in my Win7 waiting to strike again if I ever hit "update drivers").

    What a pain.

Hmm, yeah, that's strange. Maybe 9.3 or 4 will work out better for you when it comes out later this month. Sorry I can't be of any more help, I don't know what else to suggest.

Since this 7 box is the dedicated HTPC in the den, I'm not about to try updating video drivers again, as long as these work. I've learned my lesson (I hope).
