    Installing Nvidia 195.62 driver causes BSOD on boot


    After installing the latest Nvidia driver for my GeForce 8800GT my Windows Ultimate 64-bit crashes to bluescreen on booting, the only way to start it then is in safe mode. Removing the drivers does not help, forcing me to reinstall Windows completely. Using the driver that Windows downloads automatically via Windows Update seems to work, but there is often screen tearing and occasional graphic card resets. Anyone else had such problems with this driver?

    Install the driver in safe mode, using the device manager. Reboot to normal mode after it's done.

    You could also post a crash dump if you'd like to determine what the problem may be. Safe mode + networking is good for that.

    Unfortunately I am unable to install the driver in Device Manager, when I try to update the existing driver Windows says it's up to date already. If I remove it completely then the Display Adapters tab in Device Manager completely disappears and I still cannot install it from there. Installing the driver in safe mode via the installation program now causes a black screen at Windows boot with no way out except to hard-reboot.

    Safe mode device manager:

    Right click card. Update driver software. Browse my computer. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Find and double click on the NV_DISP.inf somewhere in C:\NVIDIA. Hit ok. Hit next.

    Thank you, I've done that. Unfortunately, when I restart in normal mode, I still get a black screen right after "Starting Windows..." message. So the latest driver does not work for me. When reverting to 191.07 (from September) everything works fine.

    Then you might just have to keep the old driver until a new driver comes out. =P Though you could see if they have any beta drivers out yet.

    After installing the 195.62 driver I found I had lost the 3D settings, Display settings, and video settings in my NVIDIA control panel. I had to back out to 191.07 to get them back.

    I could not get the new nvidia drivers to install without crashing my computer untill I turned of my antivirus,then the drivers installed no problem,turned on anti virus which was KIS 2010,and no problems,everything fine now.

    I am using those drivers on an AspireRevo R3610 (second gen Ion-based nettop) running Win 7 Home 64 bit...and no problems at all...so I don't think its an OS-level incompatibility.
