Windows 7 resolution problem on an older system

Alright so I have Windows 7 running fine on my newer, upstairs computer but when I tried to install it on my older computer downstairs, it was stuck in 640 resolution. I figure it is because I do not have a video card, but it seems silly that when I was running XP, I could set it to 800 x 600, but now I can't? My device manager lists my video card as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". This computer is about 6 years old, I have updated my drivers for both the monitor (IBM E74 CRT) and the video card. So, like I said above, my real question is why could I use 800x600 in XP, but not 7? and, is there anyway to get around this other than to go out and buy a video card?

Thank you fabe, great site here. Sorry about that, I was in a bit of a fluster before so I didn't think to give more information. I updated my system specs, though I couldn't find where it says what motherboard I have in Windows 7. Hopefully there is enough information now.

Try typing in DXdiag in the search box, this wil give you a listing of your hardware. Also are you running 32 or 64bit 7 ? We need to know the your display adapter. Also with only having 512mb of ram and possibly having a graphic adapter that needs to share it your going to have troubles. But lets first establish what graphics adapter your running. Thanks. Fabe
