    erm......???

i dont just post here condemning the 5 series range lightly, if i was the only one suffering my posts would be structured a little differently...... why dont you stick your head into a few of the tech sites around the web & you'll see that there is corruption & driver issues with the 5770 5850 5870 5970

i NEVER once said, these cards are CRAP & everyone who buys one will wish they hadn't, but i can assure you hundreds of ppl ive spoken too have returned them b,c DRIVER SUPPORT is not up to scratch, this whole thread has pretty much been my experience, if you wish i'll soon flood this place with ATI horror stories but that was not my intention.

if your not having issues with your card ..''great'', but dont jump in here with your ''holier than thou'' attitude when you've obviously done ZERO research into the matter...

@ Smarty....... i was using the ''hotfix'' driver for a while, but that was worse than the WHQL 9/12.

my card isnt crippled, but its not firing on ALL cylinders....which is upsetting, it'll sort itself out :)
    skunksmash et al,

I never insinuated that you said 'crap', you're both missing my point entirely. After starting your very valid thread here (btw I have been doing nothing but reading forums and tech sites about this card for weeks as I too had problems initially) I was merely making a bold statement for others NOT to completely slander the 5000 series cards as that was the perception judging by other's responses to this thread (not you).

I was merely setting the story straight that there are some users out there who have managed to get their cards functioning up to par (myself included) with the drivers that are currently available. If you do a search on here you'll find threads that I have already been involved in with regards to fixing issues with this card specifically.

Anyways, either I came off too harsh, or people are really sensitive around here! What, are you guys & gals all stressed cause it's Christmas?! I am a big boy so you can tell me if you don't like what I write but in this case I think it was a misinterpretation. This is a forum, we read text responses sans audible tones and emotions. So go pour another cup of coffee or scotch or whatever ails ya and just relax when you read forums!

    Merry Christmas
no stress mate....... its all good, this is what forums are for

i do like the new 5 series architecture, its got bags of potential..... thats why i bought into it.

im just a little annoyed with the S/W side of things...... let me tell you a story, the other day i was responding to my ticket i had open with AMD regarding these driver issues, i saw there was a phone number at the top of the ticket page, so i thought ''great'' i'll speak to someone about it...

so i ring up & a french technician is finally brought to the phone, he promptly asks me for my H/W & driver history.... so i thought SWEET, this guy knows his stuff..... so i proceeded to reel off my issues in IMMENSE detail, when i got to the end he said....

''hmm i think this will be fixed with the next driver release''...., now cmon thats a fob off if ive ever heard one.

the problem ATI have (& have always had) is the completely random, inconstant results they get on different ranges of H/W, their drivers are just very touchy/sensitive (if that's possible when talking about code )

i know with any ''new tech'' there are teething problems, but they dont seem to care as much about the ''end user'' i suppose..

but YES, ITS CHRISTMAS!! & i am loving the new card.... next year will see good developments..:)

I gotta say that I am not too certain if I trust the numbers that benchmarks show us regarding these cards. For instance, your vantage no. (nearly 22000) sounds great for a card that you think is partially crippled at the moment. My vantage score is only around the 17000 mark for the GPU which in my case I feel is low or something is wrong even though I have a 5870 (vs 5970) BUT when it comes to actual performance (crysis, Microsoft Flight Simulator) the card IS performing well.

Maybe my mobo/cpu are holding it back (see specs).

Not sure if you've read about this BIG MOUSE POINTER issue and flash playback crashes that have plagued some as I had this problem, it drove me nuts, but managed to fix it by adjusting my HT clock if you can believe that! I came upon this tip after exhausting hours upon hours of site reading.

i did hear about the ''enlarged pointer'' but that was one ive never suffered with, another one i was able to escape was the horizontal green bar which had a mind of its own as to when & where it would appear

were being choked by our chips, not enough to visually see it while gaming (b/c anything over 12k in vantage will run ALL games well), but the number crunching apps show it pretty horribly..

im going 1366 soon, so im not too worried i get GREAT fps on ALL my games.... i'll live with it

The ONLY piece of software that still begs for more juice is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Don't get me wrong, I did see a huge increase in FPS with this card BUT with that piece of software there is never enough and it is VERY thirsty for CPU performace as well. This is why I am very curious if I can unleash more power out of the 5870 just by switching from AMD Phenom IIx4 to an i7 setup for instance.

    100%....IMO :)

an i7 @ 4ghz seems to open these puppy's right out, some of the 5870 & 5970 benches ive seen with this setup are ASTRONOMICALLY high.

i wanna go ''gulftown'' but the more i7 920s i see pulling massive numbers is slowly changing my mind..

have a peek at these results, add to that the bandwidth thirsty new 5 series cards..... & you have a winning combination with the ''i7 + ATI''

That's because that game is almost entirely CPU dependent

Impressive. I am particularly interested in the audio/video encoding comparisons as I use my PC for music production and video editing. Although it may be transparent when gaming compared my current rig right now, knowing that I can get encoding and production times down by switching to Intel is enticing. In some tests in that link it was almost half the time!

From what I have been reading lately and watching the market on these chips, it would appear that the i7 920 seems to definitely be the best bang for your buck especially if you intend on overclocking it.

I wonder what boxing day will hold for getting a good mobo/i7 combo?
