it will be faster than at stock speeds but your card will run hotter and have a shorter lifespan

Particularly if it runs very hot.

The VRMS on the 5970 get very warm when overclocked.

the 5970 is the best because you always want a single card if the performance of a dual setup is about the same

The dual 5870s would have the best performance at stock clocks.

The standard 5870 is clocked at 850/1200 MHz core/memory, while the stock 5970 is at 725/1000. I doubt that the overclock potential of a standard 5970 would allow it to do better than a 5870 because of cooling issues. (If you could find a water cooled 5970, that might be different.)

Why not go for two 5970s? Quad crossfire. Good stuff. $1300 worth of graphics cards. Bragging rights for at least a month or two.

ok that would be true EXCEPT that you have to take in consideration the fact that there would be scaling because of the crossfire so because of that a single 5970 is faster
and yes two 5970's would be the best
