ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 and Windows 7

    Hi boys and girls :)

I am a new windows 7 user after just buying a brand new Acer Aspire 5738G laptop.

Here are the specs (maybe that will help someone try fix my problem :))

    Windows 7
    Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz, 800MHz FSB)
    4GB RAM
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
    DirectX 11 (I think)

I am having huge problems when trying to play games. Whenever I load up any games (apart from a couple such as Football Manager 2010 and the newish Serious Sam for some reason) the screen goes totally black and everything freezes. I am unable to move the mouse or even press Ctrl, Alt Del to try and get back to the desktop. The only thing I am able to do is push the power button to turn the system off and reboot. I have tried Tales of Monkey Island and The Sims 3 and it all just freezes before the game even loads. I am feeling pretty bummed about this as It's a brand new laptop and I would really like to be able to play games on it. I currently have the very latest drivers from ATI and Catalyst Control Centre, these have been modded for the 4570 card. I've tried to downgrade the drivers from a fresh install, the same happens. I've tried reinstalling the drivers that came for the card with the system, the same thing happens, I've tried updating the bios and yes you guessed it.. the same thing happens!

Does anyone think this is a windows 7 problem with the graphics card? Unfortunately I don't have another OS I can try it with

If anyone has got any idea I would be so appreciative as I am really starting to lose hope that I'll ever be able to play games on my system.

    Thanks for reading

    Yup, it is.

I don't have the same problems as you have, but i can't get some games to word properly. Turns out the HD 4570 is not fully compatible with DirectX 11. Still working on a solution.

that would be because that card is only a DirectX 10.1 card. Just means that if you run something that is DirectX 11, it will fall back to the highest level supported by the card.

    Some things to try.
Download the latest DirectX (june2010) Redistributable from Microsoft. This will add the additional DX9,10,10.1 files that Windows7 doesn't ship with.
Also update to either the latest Acer ATI display driver or the Mobility version of Catalyst10.8. No mod needed. (Cat10.9 isn't available for laptops)

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) DirectX (june2010)

The driver also has a profile update
